I work on my car once in a while and I thought it would be nice to buy some nicer tools.

I've been looking at the craftsman mechanic tool sets. The most appealing one has 122 pieces for about 80 bucks. I'll get almost everything I need and more, but since this is a long term investment, I was curious what do you guys think I should get?

I went to kragen and saw there tools. They have some nice powerbuilt cheaper than the craftsman with lifetime warranty too.

I am a bit indecisive right now.

I have to stay away from stuff like snap on etc since its pretty expensive.

Matco Is pretty close to snap on quality although they don't have flank drive. and they are still noticably more expensive than store brands.

If you arn't going to be using them for a living I would say go with craftsman.

Mine are mostly craftsman. The cheap stuff has looser tolerances and that makes them more likely to round bolts off but I don't know if powerbuilt falls into cheap or not. Lowes sells Kobalt that I think are made by Husky? and have a lifetime warranty. I've heard good stuff about those but haven't really looked at them and I think they cost around the same as craftsman.

Craftsman is absolutely okay for you. Some of their sets go for as much as half price during sales. The replacement warranty on them can't be beat for the price, for as long as Sears is intact anyway :)

Almost all my stuff is Craftsman. For a weekend-mechanic type I think Craftsman is pretty hard to beat.
