I see these for sale on www.newegg.com (tooless keystone jacks). How exactly to they work? The how-tos I've been reading outline the use of keystone jacks that require a punchdown tool. Does the "tooless" jack operate like a female-female plug of some kind then? Will the cables I make that come from the router need to be crossed over? Please help if you can shed any light on this. Thanks.

The styles of these vary but they are all generally of the same design. They are simple to use too. It's like a clamping thing that holds the wires, hard to explain. You shouldn't need crossover cables for a router but to get a good answer you need to be more specific on what you are exactly trying to do.

Essentially, I just wanted to know how these things worked so I knew whether or not to buy a punchdown tool. That said, I think I do understand how they work based on what you said. It's almost like the actual RJ45 connector in that you clamp down on the wires to fasten them. Am I wrong in that estimation?

Also, it's tough for me to specify when I don't really know much about what I'm doing yet :p.

That is how they work, no tool needed. Pass and Seymour makes some decent units which are carried by Lowes and other hardware store chains if ya want to buy locally. A nice thing about these is if you mess up it is easy to retry your connection.
