The term "Tool" as a negative adjective describing someone has been around for decades.

apparently for centuries, even. ;)
I had not known, until this thread, that it had such ancient usage.
Though, the etymology of it representing "dick", as in, "what a dick", is probably limited to the past few decades. And I think that's simply a follow-up to it representing the actual male anatomy. :D

You need to re-read the post about the etymology. Shakespeare uses the word 'tool' as a euphenisim for penis in Henry VIII, making it one of the oldest uses of the word.

shakespeare also used the word punk, although back then it meant prostitute, or woman of questionable morality. which makes me think of this song...by tool. its like the circle of life according to tool!
