Tool Versus NiN, which band should i try?

I have been hearing good things about these two bands. Trents work in the quake and doom series is very good. One of my friends played a song from the NiN album, downward spiral, it sounded ok. But which should i consider purchasing, i know of no Tool album names. I have never owned an album of either band Or listened to any of their songs, save one NiN song, My genre is Classic Rock, like Pink Floyd, Deep purple, The Who, Jethro Tull, David Bowie, Ozzy, etc. Are there any albums that either of these bands make that have a similar style that i might enjoy? I realize that The Downward Spiral is probably the NiN album to get, what tool album is the best?

Nine inch nails is the pop of industrial. Seen them twice live, kicked ass each time. 😎
Pretty Hate machine is pretty raw. It was the first one he did.
Broken is loud and angry.
Downward spiral is probably a good place to start. The experience from the other cds paid off.

The newer stuff is good too, but I didn't listen to it as much, and yes, I ignored many of the in between cds and singles. 😉

I like tool too. Aenima was the cd I liked the best.

I have to say, that the downward spiral is one of the best albums ever. as a cohesive unit. but they are both such great bands, you should listen to both. since you like classic rock i bet you would like tool more, and probably like their lateralus album because its very 'progressive rock'-esque

Dredg! No seriously, they're good. Oh, and for something in between Tool and the bands you like, try A Perfect Circle. Maynard is the lead singer in both APC and Tool.

bought both, The Downward Spiral andLateralus, the NiN album is meh, better than most of the modern music i heard, the slower songs on the NiN album are actually pretty good, dont like the hard line songs on it, like the 1st track, parts of it are annoying, have not tried tool yet, will as soon as i finish the downward spiral

I would listen to Tool over NiN anyday.

Not a big fan of either, though, although they do each have songs that I like.
