Tool to measure internet connectivity?

Is there a simple tool that'll simply log on a 24/7 basis when the internet connection is active/inactive? For instance, if the internet is down at 3:40am it'll tell us?

Dslreports has an online tool that will watch it for you for pretty cheap, as in a few dollars

This will let you watch up to 10 things for free. You can use a ping and monitor at intervals with alerts. You'll have to monitor from outside the network to get email alerts though.
