I can use any number of tools to work with this big MP3, but it means waiting for recompression and losing quality. I want to trim it without decompressing it, is there a tool that can do this?

i'd be interested in finding out myself.

i usually only make minor editions like lopping off beginnings/endings of songs, and i'll just decode them as WAV files and re-encode them to MP3 when i'm done. is there really a noticeable degradation in audio quality? i hadn't noticed a significant one...

If you want to cut a big mp3 file into many smaller ones, the best tool to use is Musicutter.

If you want to join a bunch of mp3's into one, your best option is mp3cat. If the program does not work, then you will need to place msvbvm60.dll and MSCOMCTL.ocx in the same dir as the exe (or your windows system dir).
