took out virus/spyware - win98 has LAN issues now

i had a customer that called me said they're computer was acting wacky. I fired it up and immediately could tell there was a massive spyware infection. So i decided to take the HD out and install it on my machine as a slave and run a virus scan and then a spyware scan. Both scans picked up alot of infections and successfully removed everything. however, after installing the drive back in the host machine, I now have some networking issues. The machine will grab an IP address on my local network no problem, it can even ping the yahoo server (216.109.118.78). the problem i'm having is that programs like AIM, and IE cannot connect to anything. and for that matter, IE wont even start up, it just hangs and must be killed in the task manager. the customer is using the said pc for bussiness so I'm kinda in a pinch at the moment as I dont really have any idea of what to try next. remember, this is a 98 box. thanks in advance for any replies.

Most likely winsock LSP list is thrashed, I'm guessing the resolvers aren't 😉. Google reinstalling winsock on 98, it's pretty simply on that OS, delete a couple reg keys and the system will rebuild it.

The program LSPfix.exe is at the link redbeard1 suggested. It is exactly for win98 that has spyware removed and can't connect to the internet, so give it a try.

If that doesn't work, the next thing to try is to remove and reinstall the network drivers. You will need the cab files or a win98 CD. They may be at c:/windows/options/cabs. Network is found at start/ settings/ control panel/ network.
