Took an old video card out and look what I found!

The video card got so hot and worked up on these solid caps that one cap really blew its metal casing off and the one next to you can see the bulge.

Normally solid caps MTBF is better than the old style caps but
I posted this as I never seen this before on a RMA'D product.

Not even going to repair it. I could cuz thats how nerdy I am but we have so many of these still laying around will just trash it.

A really good illustration of the bulgng cap problem. If it were my forum it would be stickied for reference.

I thought that bulging was not supposed to happen with solid capacitors.

It is not so much that they were not supposed to but be more stable and resistant to such things but the one capacitor had its entire metal casing popped off! Almost unheard of but I suspect this customers paticular video card was perhaps in a thunderstorm.

These solid caps as you can see have a slightly engraved "X" on the top that allows for some flexing as to deal with heat which does expand as nature does.

Cool find. I've seen hundreds of these cards... Bulged capacitors are rare, however, Completely popped off cap covers are unheard of. Wonder what popped it off. Highly doubt it was deliberate.

I suspect some kind of power surge of some sort.

Would be cool to run power surge tests to see what happens to a video card under certain conditions.

All kind of things would need to be taken into account:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Humidity
Location in what city/country
Heat
Was the pc grounded or the third plug(ground) cut off?
Environment clean or dusty or animal/rodent problems?
Was the power to the pc clean or dirty? Spikes can do weird stuff.
It's been over 20 years since I have seen any home have a FLOATING GROUND issue.

Was the PC under constant abuse: example- Was the pc in home setting or factory floor which is waxed once or twice a month?
If at factory were the clients wearing ESD straps and ESD jackets?
