Took a good tumble off my mt. bike today..

So on our campus there's a huge hill that's maybe 100-150 ft. long, and it's a great thrill to get to bike down there everyday passing people up and all..and since today was Friday, it was emptier than usual, which allowed me to pretty much coast down the whole way without braking.

By the time I was near the end of the hill I was going at least 30-35mph or so, and all of a sudden my bike tumbled over, bending the wheel and the bar part of the wheel a good amount..and rolling me about 10 ft. from where the bike landed.

A few people who were around saw it and asked if I was all right, and to my own amazement I was fine. It must've looked a lot worse than it was, especially since I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt. My knees were pretty much okay except for a little scrape on my left one. It was mostly the right side of my body that took the impact, with my elbow getting scraped up pretty badly, my lower right hip is also scraped up a bit, and my wrist hurting a little bit. And one of my buttons on my shorts ripped off too somehow..

I then ended up walking to class, and then with the adrenaline from the experience gone, the pain on the right side of my body started to set in in an unpleasant way. I had left my bike there, and walked it all the way back up the hill, and then another one back to my place. It was actually a rather thrilling experience, considering I'm pretty much okay.

The only thing I can speculate as to how this happened is that there's a little sewage thing that's about 4-5 inches wide that I might've hit on the way down causing the wheel to bend itself like that..which is odd and makes for a pretty crappy design if it can't withhold that much pressure. It's a nice Diamondback mt. bike too that has served me well in the few months that I've had it.

I'd take pics of my wounds, but not sure how high in demand that would be..and plus I bandaged it up already..

So, who can I sue? 🙂

Glad you're Ok. I took a tumble 3 weeks ago when doing some off-road stuff. The front wheel lost grip and went to the left and I was thrown to the right. I was going very slow up an switchback but I landed with my ribs right onto some rocks and it knocked the wind out of me. had so sit down for a good 5 minutes. It didn't feel to bad but later in the afternoon was hell. The day after I could not get out of bed.
I was pretty much disabled for 1 1/2 weeks.

Those wheels must be very crappy if they did bend like that.

Glad your not more badly hurt.

Well you were going rather fast and that was probably a lot of impact on the wheel at speed to buckle it.

Glad you're okay. Last bike accident I had, I split open my chin on some broken up concrete (that'll teach me). You'll be sore tomorrow, but you'll be fine. Hopefully you won't scar much!

Dude a rim is probably more expensive than that bike. 🙂

BTW, I highly doubt you were going 30-35 MPH, especially on that bike. You gotta be pedaling HARD to get going 35 MPH on a mountain bike even on a hill.

They used to put those radar-trailers - you know, the ones that you drive past and they display your speed in huge numbers - out in a neighborhood where my buddies lived and was in biking distance of home.

The neighborhood was mostly large, wide, level, concrete roads, that had very, very, very light traffic and a speed limit of 20mph or so.

So we used to zip by those speed thingers as fast as possible.

I hit low-mid 20's as my top. And I felt like I was freaking flying. I think riding a bike gives your senses more cues as to how fast it is going. I.E. riding a bike at 20 mph feels much faster than driving a car at 20mph.

therefore, I doubt you were doing 35 ish.

Also, I am happy for you that you are not dead, and bummed you are hurt and your bike is destroyed.

Buy a nice one. But if you are at a college, either attack it with sandpaper or cheap-looking spray paint so it won't get stolen.

I've hit 99+ KM/h (speedo stops at 99) on my Trek 6500 going down a really steap hill. It was asphalt and the road was wet, the water hitting my legs felt like little knives. Scarey as hell and hurt liek a bitch 😛

Anyways, I usally curise at 25KM/h (16-17MPH) when I do my bike rides on a gravel bike path with a max of 2% up hill or down hill grade. (used to be an old train track).

So 35MPH is very managable down a hill.
