Instead of pants...?
I know it's not electrical tape, but for some reason, it made me think of Ross and the black leather pants. Worth lookup on youtube if you haven't seen that episode sequence...Real Ben Stiller type stuff to happen on a date.

"I made an embarrassingly stupid mistake, believing I was off-camera," Toobin said. "I apologize to my wife, family, friends and co-workers."
"I believed I was not visible on Zoom," he added. "I thought no one on the Zoom call could see me. I thought I had muted the Zoom video."

Maybe it's because I'm a woman, but what about any of that quoted above makes even the idea of masturbating during a zoom business call in any way acceptable? Boundaries? Got any?

Yeah, unless your job is a cam boy/girl, it's not appropriate in any way.
Is just weird that the thought would even enter his mind.

"I thought I had muted the Zoom video."

Silly people relying on software.
Rule #1, if there's a cam in the room. You are visible.

Seems there need to be educational classes on how to use tech.

Would be nice if our society was less puritanical and more forgiving of such basic human mistakes.

A mistake is your spouse walking in with a towel wrapped around them and then panicking when they realized you were on video. This was no "accident". Hidden video or not, keep your dick in your pants for an hour. Even if he didn't *intend* for it to happen, he still willingly put himself into the position where it could.

I am all for forgiveness. But also for some basic societal responsibilities too.

Nope. Don't have any zoom calls. In my book, ANY dude who does this during a business call shows a complete lack of respect for any other participants in the call. Again, that may be from a female perspective.

Basic mistake of whipping it out on a conference call? That's not a "basic human mistake" - that's sexual harassment in tbe workplace and would probably get most people reprimanded at a minimum, and likely fired given the seriousness of the incident.

I think it's harassment when you know people can see or hear it. He thought he was doing it secretly. I don't think that's harassment, particularly when the response if embarrassment when found out. It's basically the same as walking into someones office and catching them in the act. Not good, but not exactly harassment.

Actually I look at it as a complete job failure. All your personal shit should be taken care of before work executing bathroom breaks or scheduled breaks.
Nail clipping/filing
Messing with hair or makeup
Shopping
Reading a book
Reading a magazine
Loooong talks about a TV show or sports

All this crap is a distraction.

You looking at this form a 9 to 5 punch clock job and any jobs don't work that way. If he was on the call minimized it and went shopping for a new car would that be something he shoudl be fired for? Even if he put in 14 hours of work regularly and was a major contributor for employer?

If he thought he turned sound and video off and minimized it its weird he couldn't wait until some other time but it isn't OMG he is horrible.

I think he was being honest. There's nothing he could say to make it OK. Maybe he could have said "This isn't an excuse. What I did was not acceptable." Would that change things?

Some more context from here. I guess Trump was losing in the simulation, and Jeffrey got excited.

Two people who were on the call told VICE separately that the call was an election simulation featuring many of the New Yorker's biggest stars: Jane Mayer was playing establishment Republicans; Evan Osnos was Joe Biden, Jelani Cobb was establishment Democrats, Masha Gessen played Donald Trump, Andrew Marantz was the far right, Sue Halpern was left wing democrats, Dexter Filkins was the military, and Jeffrey Toobin playing the courts. There were also a handful of other producers on the call from the New Yorker and WNYC.

Both people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to speak freely, noted that it was unclear how much each person saw, but both said that they saw Toobin jerking off. The two sources described a juncture in the election simulation when there was a strategy session, and the Democrats and Republicans went into their respective break out rooms for about 10 minutes. At this point, they said, it seemed like Toobin was on a second video call. The sources said that when the groups returned from their break out rooms, Toobin lowered the camera. The people on the call said they could see Toobin touching his penis. Toobin then left the call. Moments later, he called back in, seemingly unaware of what his colleagues had been able to see, and the simulation continued.

Jeffrey Toobin’s Zoom call has all the classic earmarks of a Russian disinformation operation, according to dozens of former senior intelligence officials.
