Too much HD access on AMD system

Just pulled this one fresh from the rumour mill.

Heard that there are issues with some systems using AMD CPUs in the way that they have way to much HD access, like all the time and that this thus would spoil the systems performance.

Anyone?

Not bashing AMD here, I'm currently dreaming up a AMD based system (since Intel is so damned expensive) and would like to know if there is something I need to be aware of?

How do you determine too much access ? but that flashing red light ? I have no idea how one would determine the cpu using too much hdd..

Probably the AMD system that was tested was equipped with too little RAM.

The system in question should have 256MBs of RAM. Other than that the keyword is rumour. The whole thing was descibed as loading something up, like a game, and then it would just stutter since the system keept accessing the HD.

Sounds like hard disk DMA transfers weren't enabled on this AMD system. Same thing happened to me when I upgraded AMD K6/2 300mhz -> Intel Celeron 300A@375mhz (83mhz FSB) and was forced to disable DMA transfers because my Seagate ST36531A wouldn't take 41.5mhz PCI. Though the Celeron was faster, it stuttered more than the K6 in games which did lots of HDD access.

jpprod- Thanx.

Rigoletto- ah heck off. And for your information I don't employ rumour mongers, though I do sport quite a collection of creative truth consultants. So far Intel has not commented on them.
