A 4 bore would shoot lead balls that would weigh 4 ounces. This would be 4 balls per pound of lead. An 8 bore would use 2 ounce shot or 8 balls per pound of lead. This type of rifle used large charges of black powder to propel the lead ball. It was usually used on elephant or other dangerous game.

ok, wasn't sure about the bore thing, 4 ounces is a lot of lead, the average 12 guage lead slug is about 1 ounce, up 1 1/2 ounce
