Too much engine oil?

I changed my engine oil today and even though I should have put almost exactly the amount the owners manual specified (+/- 100 ml), the oil was above the full line on the dipstick when I checked.

Think it should be okay, or should I do something about it? I drove around for a bit and nothing exploded. 🙂

Give it time, recheck it, if it's still too high I wouldn't worry about it if it's just a little bit.

was it warm when you checked? Were you on a flat surface? Did you pull out, wipe, then recheck?

Yes, yes, and yes.

just how far over the full mark is it?
You know, I can't really tell. Looks like the whole bottom of the dipstick has liquid on it after I pull it out. Quite confusing. but there's definitely no liquid line anywhere under F.

Normally oil is fill to the bottom 1/4-1/3 of the marked dip stick after oil change then refill once it have a chance to heat up.

Hmm, maybe... car was drained while sitting with only the front end on jackstands. But, the drain plug and bottom of the engine drains backwards and downwards anyway so it looks like it should have drained completely. I definitely left it for long enough, it was draining for like half an hour while I had dinner.

But did you change the filter?

Yup.

Hmm, JinLien, I never even thought of doing it that way. But then, even if I had, I would have thought that doing that would risk not having enough oil in the engine, and the damage/problems that come with that.

You can run on a low amount of oil for a good bit of time. Mind you, you're risking some damage, but at the amount he's suggesting, you'd be fine.

Many engines is design to have the oil pump working as low as 2 quarts down therefore shouldn?t be a problem if you are 1/2 quart low.

Check oil level after you fill it to the top of the mark on the dip stick before firing it up recheck oil level once the engine cranks over a few turn and you will see a small drop of 1/3-2/3 quart.

you fill to the line. nothin else matters. do not go over the line. overfull=damage

Okay, so how would you go about removing oil from the engine?

Got a coolant tester, or a turkey baster? 😉 You could always unscrew the drain plug for a second.

Loosen the drain bolt and take it out with your fingers, let it drain for a bit, then screw the drain bolt back in finger tight and recheck the level.

Hmm, okay I just checked again, and it's over the F mark by about a third of the distance between the low mark and full mark, which is 1 quart, so it's probably reasonable to say that it's overfilled by a third of a quart.

1/3 qt isn't a terrible amoount to be overful. Since you never answered those who asked, did you start the car and run it for a while before checking? Gotta fill up that oil filter to get an accurate reading...

Sorry, yes, I did start car, and actually drove around for a while. And the 1/3 qt I read is today, after the car has been driven quite a bit, and then I let it cool for about 5 mins before reading as per manual instructions.
