too many processes?

I'm running on Vista and I feel like I have way to many processes running. When I open up task manager, it says around 65-70, and that's when I'm just listening to music, chatting, browsing the web. I'm not sure what the normal amount of processes is for Vista, but I remember it being a lot less on XP. Is this normal? I've checked start up programs, and there are only 10 things on the list. The task manager list is quite short as well... so where are all the processes coming from and is it even important?

When I look under the hood of my car, there's a bunch of stuff I don't know what it does, and my first car didn't have most of that stuff. Should I just start tearing out anything I don't recognize? ;)

No, of course not. If it's not broke... right.

There is always allot of background proses that don't use up hardly any CPU cycles. Most are there just waiting for them to be needed. Only get rid of ones you know what they are. Like say a google or Yahoo toolbar, Skype, or other programs you have that load whne the system starts.

I have 62 processes on Vista currently.

Personally, I consider a "lean" system to be 50 processes for Vista, or 30 for XP.

I have 79 processes going on right now. There's nothing wrong with that. Most of them are background service programs that make things run.

Running XP-Pro/SP3 with over 50 apps installed, 5 HDDs, plus scanner, external burner, and Dymo label printer. That results in 73 process and a cpu utilization of 4-7% when on line with Anandtech. This is quite normal and is not a problem at all.
