Too many com ports apparently in use.

On WinXP, I have trying with some difficulty to install synching software for my LG cell phone and have found that it (at last count) was trying to synch using com port 27, ports 1 thru 26 claiming to be in use. I find it hard to believe I have 26 devices and/or processes using all those ports. Is there a way to find to what these com ports are assigned to and perhaps free one or more up if the device/processes are no longer relevant ? 😕
