Too HOTTTTT!!!!! Athlon (Tbird) 1.33GHZ on KT7A?

Bios reports that the CPU temp is @ 176F/80C.
Now, I touched the heatsink but it's not that hot.
MOBO: Abit KT7A with the lastest bios. 2/14/01

What heatsink do you have? Are you using arctic silver or something like it? If the heatsink isn't that hot, make sure that you put it on the socket correctly. 80 C is much too hot and are approaching AMD's max spec for the processor. Make sure the heatsink is on correctly. You shouldn't be able to slide it around or move it.

of course since you're not measuring die temp it could very much be in the 90C area, maybe even higher

if the heatsink isnt warm, it oculd be that it's not gteting good contact with the CPU die

unless thats just a very horrible temp reading since ur CPU hasnt died yet but ive never heard of anything like that 🙂

Make sure you have a good coat of good quality thermal paste. The lower quality the heatsink is machined, the more you'll need to use.

If you're using a poorly-machined heat sink, using more thermal paste is not the answer. Thermal paste is designed to work when it is compressed to a thin film. If your HS isn't flat or isn't seated completely, as previously commented upon, that is the problem that must be taken care of: lap the bottom of the heat sink until flat if that's what is needed, or remove and reapply the HS(including a cleaning off of and reapplication of the thermal paste you're using). Good luck.
