Doesn't work with me, unless you have cash money up front. I get asked all the time, too. I don't really get it, but some people seem to mistake my pizza bag for a "Taxi" sign.
Here's the deal: I charge more than a taxi, because I'm not a taxi. I say $5 or $10 a head, up front, depending on my mood. Most people turn me down, which is fine with me. If you haven't turned me down at that point, you'll get a ride if and only if: A) you can tell me the exact address or intersection up front, because that's where I'll take you--ONE STOP--then I kick you out of my car--if you're lost, that's your problem, not mine (I don't get lost

) ; B) it's not a bad hood; C) it's close; D) I'm going that direction anyway; E) I feel absolutely at ease with the situation.
Some dumb-ass drunk suburban dude was trying to beg a ride from all of us delivery drivers at work "because a cab would be $40" and he didn't have the money. I asked him where he lived. He said "Eagan," a suburb that's like 20 miles away. I told him "$40 sounds about right," and laughed. It was a Friday or Saturday, so there were 6 or 7 drivers on. None of us know how (or if) he got home that night, because nobody rides for free with any of us.
