I was wondering what everyone thought of the new G5, and maybe switching/adding to the mac crowd.

Games is not a problem, and i'll have my athlon 2800xp dual monitor system for windows stuff + my x1000 laptop.

What does everyone think about the G5 and etc....

I was playing with imovie, and etc... and really like it, aso other software is very cool.

It's "Mac", short for Macintosh, not "MAC".

MAC means something entirely different.

Now, if you really like it and can afford it, get it! You will end up really liking it.

If you're going into IT, some mac experience is essential, unless you want to be just another drain on American IT's rep. There's always 1 or 2 guys in the company, usually artists, that hang onto their Macs because they can't be arsed to learn about closing the window from the other corner. (Wait, didn't they change the interface in OSX so it matches with Windows' controls? My OSX machine is in the corner and hasn't had power applied in months)

Essentially, yes. The only reason anyone should have a mac is so that they can support people who have them but don't need them (And there are increasingly rare situations where some software demands a mac - but I'm not aware of any software worth it's pricetag that has this complication any longer. iMovie is weak, Pinnacle Studio 8 runs $50, or $100 with a board with both firewire and analog inputs and does everything iMovie will.

It would be nice to see the gaming posibilities, but its a mac so i think you have minesweeper and HL in years, but dont worry HL2 is coming in years for the mac. But now you can build a great comp for much less--buy AMD or intel (half the price and you CAN play games).

EDITED: reread posts and realized that gaming not a problem, but for 3 grand for video I'd buy a huge TV, surround sound, and tons of DVDs. But by video you mean editing then yes the mac is what you want (even before g5 macs are best for video and sound editing)

Macs do a lot more than edit audio and video. Apple computers and OS X can do anything a Windows computer can do. I don't play games on my Mac (that is why I have a PC too), but I do everything else on it.

Deeming them "useless" would be myopic and just tells me that, if you feel that way, you really don't know what the hell you are talking about.

I called them useless for games the realized my mistake and added the EDITED part. Because for a home comp (assuming one person wants to play games) they ARE useless. Also for twice the price, why get a mac if you dont video edit. My rig cost me $1600 in june (with a 17"LCD) and g5=$3000. I could get 2 of my comps for the cost of 1 G5; take a guess what i'd pick.

If you can afford it by all means go for it. The only thing you'll see yourself doing on the current computer is playing games probably, lol, seriously.

I love Mac's, but for the price and my current $0 incomine as a 15 year old, I would never buy one. But, if I had the money and a seperate computer for gaming, I would go ahead and buy a Mac. That being said only if I had everything else I wanted for the price of the Mac or lower. Being me, even if I had the money, I'd spend all that on other things.

I love my G5, it's the best editting machine I've ever laid hands on, using the best software (Final Cut Pro, good luck using that on a PC). But unless you have a specific use for it, there's really no reason to spend so much on one.

There are a lot of great reasons to own a Mac. I don't do video editing, but I prefer OS X to Windows for my day-to-day computing.

and for the people that cant pay 3 grand for a comp, dont buy them. thats my point.

EDITED: for $1400 i'd learn a new OS, but if money is not option or feel 1400 additional dollars for macOS is okay then buy a mac. Sounds stupid doesnt it $1400 for a OS.

#1 - G5's start at $2K, not 3. And I got my dual G4 for under $1300.

#2 - All I am saying is people immediately dismiss Apple and OS X as a viable computing platform.

It seems that most people who don't know anything about Macs tend to say they are useless unless you are doing audio or video editing. That isn't the case at all.

2k for a comp is high, there is a reason dell is a growing company--budget systems. I'm just saying for the money macs are not worth it unless you are into video editing. I could easily build, and have built, a decent machine for under $700.

#2--people dismiss them for 1 major reason--GAMES. Billion dollar industry--says something doesnt it.

If you're not into games and video edit heavily then buy a mac. But if you dont video edit, then save the green and dont buy the mac.

As someone who owns both a Mac and a PC I have to disagree. Macs can make great home computers. I purchased a Mac for editing purposes and soon found myself wanting to use it daily tasks more than my trusty Win2k box I built 3 years ago. Currently I'm saving up for a Powerbook that will replace my Win2k box as my "daily driver." If you factor in bundled software + hardware then the price for a Mac isn't that much higher, if higher at all, than that of a manufactured PC (Dell, HP, Gateway, etc.,).

Well, you should compare apples to apples.

The iMac 17, a quintessential home PC, is around $1800 in a uniquely compact form factor.

I doubt your rig is comparable to the G5 2.0 GHz DP "supercomputer".

The only reason games are an issue on the Mac is because computer games are not as large of an industry as it looks like. The Mac has no technical reason why it's not adiquate to play games, it's processor, video, and memory systems are all up to the task, as its OS subsystems use standard interfaces(OpenGL in this case), so it's not any more difficult to make a game for a Mac than a PC(in fact, due to the homogeneous nature, it should be a bit easier). The only reason it's a problem is because games are not made for a Mac, which in turn is because no one believes people will play games on the Mac, creating a self-perpetuating cycle, further influenced by the small market share. Currently, Aspyre and MacSoft are the only major companies to make games for the Mac(Bungie, one of the last native Mac companies, was purchased by MS), and their job is port-based, so their games by definition come out months after the original PC game, since they have to port the game from PC to Mac.

The Mac could be a fine gaming platform, but no one will give it a chance, so no one believes there is a chance, so no one even tries.
