That's a shock to hear, but couldn't be a better time for the man to move on...to another team. He's a lifer, he'll be back somewhere.
 
Very unexpected but a nice way to go. He's definitely a lifer but he doesn't have to manage anymore. Maybe he'll do something else with MLB or the Cards.

I'm a hardcore die hard Rangers fan myself but /thumbsup to Larussa. An excellent manager and he left on a high note 🙂

I don't think this will affect Pujols' decision to sign or go, which seems to be all about $$. Imo he would prefer to stay, but will have no problem going elsewhere to earn more in a larger/longer contract.

Either way, he's amazing and it's always nice to go out with a bang.
 
If La Russa thought he had another shot next year with Pujols he would stick around. The fact that he's leaving now cements the fact that Pujols is out.

Remember, La Russa has stated several times Pujols is the greatest player he has ever coached. He helped build this guy up from his first year. These guys are a team, and when the team is broken, La Russa will be done.

Shame because I think they stand a good chance of a repeat next year.

He was 35 away from second place, but around 1,000 behind Connie Mack. IOW, he was 10 straight "near best seasons ever" from having the most.

I don't agree. Managing takes a huge psychological toll. I think Tony had had enough, and is bright enough to know that, with or without Pujols, there was no guarantee of the Cards getting back to the WS, so he seized the moment and went out on top.

Pujols may sign with another team (I kind of doubt this, but you never know), but I personally don't think this much entered into La Russa's decision, which I happen to think was an extremely wise one.
 
Well the Cubbies spent triple what the Pie Rats did on payroll last year (about 34 million IIRC) and it's not helping them any! 😀

part of it is an issue of "fairness". If Carl Crawford gets $20M a season and I'm Pujols, I'd be at least a little annoyed if the Cards don't offer $25M avg. IMO $25M/yr is a hometown discount and it's not Albert's fault they decided to give Matt Holliday $120M two years ago.

Be nice if he stays, would definitely be a step down signing with the Cubs or working for broke-ass Frank McCourt. L.A. Angels could be an interesting decision if they decide to pay top dollar for a change.
