Apparently it costs the shelter less than $9 to euthanize these animals. Otherwise they might as well offer free vaccinations.

It talks about strays a lot. Thats like saying, you feed a homeless person, you have an obligation to it. And I love how their rabies example is from a bat. Yea well, your not vacinating bats are you...

No, it isn't like saying you feed a homeless person you have an obligation to them. A Pet can't walk away and get placed with a decent family or a shelter if some asshat is feeding it, and then decides that nine dollars is just TOO much. That's about two weeks worth of Dog Food, really. Humans are not animals, they can get help by asking for it, but a Pet just sits there loving its bastard owner.

The hilarious thing about it, is that Shelby County is the richest county in Alabama, and one of the wealthier counties in the nation. Median household income is 21,000 above the State average and the median home value is almost double the rest of the State. To put it in perspective, the median income is slightly less than Orange County California, and this is Alabama we are talking about. The cost of living here is so dirt cheap, that the median income here is insane compared to other places in the state and most counties in this nation.

You took it out of context. They say:
-----
Instead of paying as little as $9 to get pets and strays vaccinated, residents are willingly giving them to a crowded shelter, said Sara Shirley, the Humane Society's volunteer coordinator.
-----
I bet for the MAJORITY of people that they do not get it at this price and it is a lot more expensive.

If I am reading the article correctly, the pets all made it to the shelter just fine when the $9 vacinations became strictly reinforced. And what would have happened if these people didn't feed strays? They'd be dead on the street somewhere? Or maybe dead sooner from being stuck in an overcrowded shelter?

And yes, I think a stray pet would love it's "Bastard Owner" that took enough time to feed it and keep it alive when someone else obviously didn't.

Maybe I am missing something? Am I getting the term stray pet confused with another term?

Yeah it is sad.

Funny how this thread came up as I have to take my cat to the vet today. Ugh. I had to give her a tranquelizer (fun fun). And hopefully in 2hrs I'll be able to get her into the carrier (locked her in the bthroom).

My cats are indoor cats, they don't go out at all, no chance of them getting rabies, no bats are going to fly into my window, but the vet makes me pay $50 for the shot every time. $9 would be a lot less painless.

Are there any vet hospitals that give rabies shots for free?

People don't take care of their own children. What makes you think they give two sh!ts about an animal?

:thumbsdown::eek: for people

Don't know of any free ones but I've bought them at the feed store for some neighborhood dogs before (their owners wouldn't vaccinate them so I bought a few of the Distemper/Parvo/etc along with rabies vaccines and did the deed). There's a feline vaccine available at http://www.dresslersdog.com/rabies.html

Not really:

Green said it was "unbelievable" that people were surrendering pets instead of paying for rabies shots. He has conducted several clinics throughout Shelby County this month, vaccinating about 4,000 animals for $9 each.

And the Humane Society has started holding rabies clinics each Friday for $10 an animal, Shirley said.

There was a lot more to this story, because they had PLENTY of shots and mentioned the 9 dollar shots on the TV, newspaper, and radio about a gazillion times. It wasn't an issue of supply or time either...

It really burns me because I had to take my dog to the Emergency Vet last night and eat up those lovely fees. Bloody stool = bad.

First of all, people should neuter/spay their pets, and that can be done for CHEAP as well at numerous clinics and shelters. Secondly, someone feeding a stray didn't give a chance to someone who MIGHT have actually vaccinated it and fed it instead of just poking it for amusement from time to time.

Find me a vet that only will charge $9 for a rabies shot. Every vet I've ever gone to will charge at least $35-$40 for an "Exam" to make sure the animal is OK before they will give it a shot. Vets are some of the biggest scam artists around. They charge double what it really costs them for medications and such (Ever to go petmeds.com). They rape you on exam and surgery fees, and half the time they don't even care about the animals.

What if the strays were never fed by these people? What if these people just released the strays in some other part of town? Wouldn't they just breed for a while and then end up at the same shelter and meet the same fate as if the person that was feeding them took them there? There is a problem with strays breeding, at least these people are taking the animals to the shelter. If you're outraged by this story, how many strays have you picked up and paid to neuter?

For a moment I thought that it might be that they couldn't be hassled to take the cat to a vet. Then I realized how dumb that thought was, since they could be hassled to take the cat to the humane society.
