I have a tone generator and probe that I use for UTP. It has an 8P8C mod plug on one end and two aligator clips on the other end. Can I use this to trace coax? I know where the coax ends, but there are 5 other pieces of coax ending at the same location.

I'm thinking if I connect one clip to the center conductor and the other to the ground/screw part of the connector, I should be able to find the tone with the probe at the other end.

Will this work? I've only worked on UTP and the old 4 color phone cables with this tool.

9 volt battery wired to one of the cable. Led with a resistor for the testing end.
Old school but it works great.

Mostly I don't want to somehow damage the kit since it doesn't belong to me.

The 9V battery solution would work if I had those items around. Even 1.5V, would work if I can find my DMM. I've had to resort to DMM with AA, electrical tape and 'gator clips to trace phone cable in the past (not connected to NID of course). But in a dimly lit basement with rats nest of wire (1940s house), the tone generator was a more attractive solution.

I found the end of the coax regardless with the tone generator. Thanks all.

Hope you figured it out by now. We use the alligators for everything from coax to 2 conductor to flat 6 conductor. Thats what its for.

Yes, my tone generator has gator clips and I clipped those to the coax and was able to use the probe to find the other side.
