Toms's Hardware, 2800+ w/nForce 2 vs. P4 3.06 HT, both various video cards

It just hit me on why I'm surpised..... The P4 always wins one gaming benchmark.... Quake 3..... No Q3 benchmarks. Toms is getting more and more disappointing every time I read an article there.

Oddly enough? Entirely expected if you ask me. Pair up the fastest CPU with the fastest chipset on the fastest FSB and you will get the fastest system. Nothing odd about it. Don't worry about it though...it will spank the Intel in MP3/MPEG also.

wow, interesting. but i'm sure tom got paid off by AMD. he had a little set up at their tour thing...oh wait, so did Anandtech. CONSPIRACY! 😉

Interesting because with the nforce 2 boards not using on board video, have less memory bandwidth available. I wonder if i850e would have been faster....hmmm prolly not though.

What 2800+XP? It's a 2700+XP!

:Q

And some of the results seem really screwy with the "old" 8500 Radeon beating the 9700Pro in at least one instance.

I think thats just a benchmark of the current graphics cards available on the market.

Yes, I was going to say the same thing. Why would you compare mpeg compression or mp3's if you have umpteen different vid cards. It doesn't matter squat. People should think before they start to post.

Welcome to the extensively updated Tom's Hardware Guide VGA Charts.

What do you think Jedi Knight II was based on?? Q3, the actual game, is getting pretty dated now (with huge framerates on present day cards) and everyone has seen it benched over and over so I hope that they soon stop using it since we have better games to bench with, even ones that are newer and still use the Q3 engine.

What did surprise me was how many of the benches seem to support that the Gf4 Ti's are faster on both platforms (AMD and Intel) than any of the latest ATI offerings (9700Pro, 9700 included).

There is nothing odd about that, while those benches might be incorrect those two set-ups will still be neck and neck even if the P4 is ahead by a hair in a few areas.

The GeForce3 Ti series beat ATI's high end cuz they were using a low res for their benchmarks ... without any AA too.

I honestly don't think that any of these hardware websites are influential enough to even attract "bribery" from an IC manufacturer. Just another example of people overestimating their own importance.

I remember hearing a rumor that AMD would go to a 200mhz (400mhz ddr) fsb for the Barton I think it was? Is this true? Upping the front side bus on Athlons helps quite a bit, at least in gaming performance. Anand didn't say it was currently much of any help but I did my own testing with an Athlon XP at 1600mhz. At 133mhz fsb I got a 3DMark score of 11,976 (Radeon 9700), and at 166mhz front side bus I got a score of 13,024. At 180mhz fsb I got 14,098, I couldn't go more than a few mhz higher with the same mem timings so I stoped there. Sorry to wander off topic, just wondering if anyone knows anything about 200mhz fsb rumor.

Possibly, but not intially. Linky

I could of swore I saw 2800+ in there 🙁 my bad.

Dr Smooth, I hope you caught my sarcasm in Tom being paid off by AMD, since you pointed out it goes both ways.

The P4 is using a motherboard with a 845PE chipset, hardly the fastest platform. Meanwhile, the XP is using the latest and fastest, the nforce2. Using a 850E based board or GBay with the P4 would be more relevant.

Who got the idea that the article was supposed to be pinning the performance of the two CPUs against each other? The entire point of the article is to get an idea of how video cards perform relative to each other. Furthermore, any benchmarks besides games would be worthless when comparing GPU performance. Also, Jedi Knight II is based on the Q3 engine, so whoever said no Q3 games were used is wrong.
