Tomshardware: Conclusion: VIA P4X266A And SiS645 Are Better Solutions Than i845D

For the most part, the i845D were consistently outperformed by the SiS 645 and P4X266A boards

Naturally 😛

Come tax time I'll still get an Intel chipset because the differences are so small and Intel's stability is what I'm looking for.

The performance differences between the chipsets are very minimal. Nothing you would ever notice outside of a benchmark. I'd go for the Intel chipset for the sure stability even if it cost a few $$ more.

I think someone came to the wrong conclusion. Here is what Anand had to say in his roundup:

<< Although the P4X266A and SiS 645 chipsets are both faster than the i845 with DDR SDRAM, neither chipset has such a stable following of platforms as the i845. We've been working on a P4X266/P4X266A roundup alongside the i845 DDR roundup and the maturity of the boards is like night and day; the i845 platforms are much more stable, especially when operated with all memory banks populated. >>

This is why I stick with an Intel platform.

Well, what do you expect oldfart?

VIA vs Intel ... boy, that's a tough choice. The issues surrounding P4X266 are well documented, and I personally wouldn't touch "A" with a ten foot pole.

SiS 645, OTOH, hasn't had those issues. In fact, nowhere have I seen anyone mention SiS 645 being unstable. And, speaking from personal experience (one reboot in the last 30 days, to install 23.11 dets) SiS 645 is "rock stable".

Nevermind, misread something up above.
