It was never my favorite tech hardware site, but good for them. People might complain about being a 'sell-out' but put in their position, most people would likely jump at the opportunity to cash-in to ensure their financial security.

It would be interesting to see confirmation of the buyer. I know TechCrunch was planning on branching out with plans to make acquisitions in the media field.

I used to read it a lot back in the late 90's. I don't think I've visited the site since then though. Makes you wonder how much a site like Anandtech could get.

I remember when Sharky Extreme used to be the tech site back in the day. Then they started writing biased reviews to please their sponsors. A lot of people caught on and started visiting other sites like anandtech. Then in around 2001 the site owner sold the site to internet.com and the site went to hell. That was around the time I came here and never looked back. :)

So is AnandTech the authoritative source when it comes to hardware reviews or is there other sites? I don't really keep up with them, but read AT once and while when something catches my eye.

It has actually been that way for about two years now. Anandtech.com does not really post much anymore.

Lets hope its not Internet.com who bought them, Internet.com has ruined every tech site they bought.

I'd be willing to bet more than 50 million, easy. With the forum base here and the fact that you can actually NAVIGATE anandtech.com is a huge plus over tomshardware. I, like many others, have not used or relied on Tom's for several years due to the amount of ads and the lack of organization throughout the site. It was great while it lasted, but went downhill for me after 2002 or so.

What makes a site worth so much when say, 50% of the users are web savvy and have flash disabled or utilize tools such as ad-block? (Not saying 50% of the users do this though, just hypothetical)

The value of a website is totally dependant on what the buyers are willing to pay, not what the actual worth of the site is (see YouTube).

That said, AT would still be worth a lot because the users of AT are far more likely to hold an influental position in a company than say those that read CNN. Also, while some users do use ad blocking technology, they can't block the many other forms of advertising used.

With 5m+ views/month I am kindof surprised it sold for only 15-20m. I would have expected more (unless there are problems going on at Toms).
