Tom's blows

just a survey here to seem how many folks agree with my assessment of the current state of that once-venerable hardware site, tom's hardware. i recall umpteen years ago when the net started becoming popular and toms was one of the first and best hardware review sites. somehow over the past two years it's gone downhill considerably, to the point where i think i'm going to stop checking it altogether. some examples:

- a while back (perhaps 18 months?) an article was posted by tom (the last i've seen, i guess he's too good to actually do any real research any more) about one of the computer shows. the lead-off to the story was a picture of tom, sitting at at table in front of a big picture of, guess who, tom!, signing autographs. the entire content of the article was how lame the show was. no reporting of any products what so ever!

- during the last amd extreme event road show it was advertised that writers from toms would be present and available to answer questions. at the show there was one guy, dressed like and acting like he thought he was some kind of rock star, who barely paid attention to me when i approached with a rather detailed technical question. he acted bored and put-upon the entire time and brushed me off quickly. i had been looking forward to a technical conversation with a fellow enthusiast, instead i was treated like i wasn't important enough for him to waste his time on.

- all the articles i've read recently are focused more on being clever, sarcastic, and superior, rather than giving a straight, technically based description of the item/issue being discussed. their coverage of ces was just plain stupid and, unlike many other reviews i read, provided no information about interesting new products on the horizon.

that's my two bits. just curious if anyone else has noticed this as well.

That was a well thought out post, but seeing that I do not even travel over to tomshardware anymore, I can't disagree or agree. Even though your post was well thought out, the absence of capitalization made it a little unpleasant to read. Just a little critique, don't mind me.

I haven't gone there on purpose in a while. Occasionally I'll search for some bit of info and google shows it on that site so I'll pop in to grab the info and leave. I don't often stay...

Just bleh nowadays.

Anand and HardOCP are my two sites these days. I think I've just surfed over to Tom's for the last time. Between anand and HardOCP I get all the great reviews I need, plus good links to what's going on elsewhere on HardOCP. I've even stopped reading slashdot - HardOCP has similar content and is more fun to boot!

Sorry about the lack of caps ... a bad habit of mine!

I say as good/bad as any other site.

I personally have never seen the kind of stuff I've heard of people complaining about. (Severe bias and the likes) but I don't lurk there much. The only times I really go searching for hardware reviews and articles I've gone straight to Anandtech first. I've read up on a few things at Toms, (mostly peripheals) and nothing really seemed unusual at the time, most of what I read was at the least informatve and decenlty thought out. Though I've also been to a lot of sites that seem to have been run by 14 year olds and their opinions of what they just used their allowance to buy.

My point exactly. Just curious to see how many folks agreed with me. Based on this highly scientific survey it looks like I'm in good company! ;)

It was pretty obvious when they gave the Editors Choice for i865 motherboards to the MSI instead of the Abit IS7, at the same time as the website was plastered with MSI advertising. Coincidence?

There have also been "reviews" that are straight press releases with zero actual testing, like the useless muvo "review" I read when deciding on a flash MP3 player.

There is still some useful information there sometimes in specific item descriptions, you just can't trust the overall summary and "best of" choices.

Not that I've bothered to visit THG in weeks :)

Sometimes I don't get an unbiased feeling when I do read a hardware review there. But I did enjoy this article.

That was a nice critique. However, the use of run-on sentence structure made it a little unpleasant to read. Don't mind me.

IMO, a lot of websites have been going downhill lately. For example, Anandtech has been few and far between with the reviews the past few months (although they have done a pretty good job on the reviews they do have). HardOCP is the same as always. THG has always = sh!t to me. SharkyExtreme has been downhill since their main guy left(forget his name but he wrote some stellar reviews, used to be my favorite site). A lot of the major review sites in general have been in a decline more or less over the past several months to a year. Not saying its their fault, just something I noticed.

Tom's has gone off the corporate bizzotch cliff. They write reviews based on hype and who sends them the most cool stuff. I stopped using his sight when all his recommendations started turning out to be very bad choices. I've gone back once in a while to see what he has to say, since I usually have to be prepared to dispute his reviews whenever my PC World loving dad decides to have a technical converstion with me.

anandtech was slipping for awhile, but lately I'm seeing a lot more reviews on a more frequent basis...

I've found some good, useful info on his site, but I had my own personal tangles with his ... ummmm... strange personality. Some long time members may recall them, but it's old enough that it isn't worth repeating, here.

i think what you're referring to would be tom's huge ego and his deeply rooted conviction that everything he says or does is better than anything anybody else says or does?! ;)

i'd have to agree, several years ago the frequency of reviews here at AT took a major drop ... seems like this corresponded with anand going off to college so maybe understandable! anyway, i think it's gotten a lot better over the past 3/4 months - and one thing, even when the reviews were rare you could always count on them to be in-depth and unbiased. go anand!
