Last week I turned in my two weeks notice.

Tomorrow marks the last week with my current employer of 4.5 years.

Pretty crazy looking back at my time there to see where the journey has taken me.

When I started, I was only married for 5 months. Had moved from another state with my new wife before we were married only the year prior.

3 managers and as many titles later, own a home and I have a son that will be 2 next month.

In a lot of ways it feels like I've crammed a hell of a lot of life into not even 5 years.

Here's to closing one chapter in life and starting the next. :beer;

FWIW I wasn't even looking for another job, it just found me. It's nice to finally see the (IT in ATL area at least) job market booming again.

Congrats! Next week is my wife's last week with her current employer of 8 years - the first place she worked out of college.

I am putting in my notice tomorrow as well, but it's more like 4 weeks.

We are relocating for new opportunities. I'm very excited, but it's going to be a busy month between when I leave one position and start the next, since we need to actually move.

Is it weird that I still care about getting things done even though it's my last week?

Everyone keeps asking me if I'm checked out yet. But honestly I don't feel like it. Still want to make sure things are tended to.

Not at all. If anything, I've always felt a need to wrap things up, rather than let them fester and just hand them off.

Congrats! I left a job of 7 years about 6 months ago, and it was crazy to see how much had taken place in that time.

Good luck with the next chapter of your life!

You were not fired on the spot? Cudos to the employer for accepting your 2 week notice, and not getting all pissed off about it.

Some places I worked, if you gave your 2 weeks notice, you were told to go ahead and leave right then.

Why would his employer be pissed for him giving 2 weeks notice? Last time I checked you are required to give notice before leaving a job. Plus it gives you time to wrap up your work, and pass on your projects to other people.

In most office environments people aren't 'shunned' or kicked out for moving to another company.

it's about 50/50 here (large company) - I don't understand it when it happens, but I do see people asked to leave by EOD when they gave their 2 wks notice.

I left my previous employer of 9.5 years about a year ago.
It is very weird going to a new company, but there are so many parallels that you settle in quickly.
The only things that are not replaceable are work friends and connections.

I miss a lot of my old work friends and acquaintances.

Wow, reading your post was like reading my own life story right now. I put in my two week notice at my current job last week, this coming Friday is my last day. I've been at this job for almost 4.5 years. When I started, I had been married for only 8 months, a home owner for only 6. We just got a new manager last week, which makes #4 for me (so basically 3 in my tenure). No kids for me though. :p

My new job also basically fell into my lap. I had submitted a resume through a friend over 6 months ago and just got a call out of the blue for a position that had opened up.

I read that you are in manufacturing and it can happen here too, HR will let you go if you don't tell them where you are going, but as long as you do they usually are happy to let you stay out the 2 weeks. They just want to be sure you aren't staying long enough to carry out some company info.
