Assembly

And I'm going :D! Will see lots of demos and I will be present in two seminars. Tomorrow is "Graphics hardware for handheld devices" By Petri Nordlund of Bitboys (no flaming please), and in friday it's "AMD Hammer" by Joakim Stenberg of AMD . And maybe I will see something interesting in the Bitboys-seminar ;)....

Joakim's presentation will cover the key new features of AMD's latest powerhouse, the HAMMER processor including:

Hammer processor technology
Hammer chipset technology
Hyper Transport

WOOHOO!

Woot! Can't wait to see what new demo's/intro's are released this year. I'm hoping to see some kickass stuff from some of my favorite groups!

From the mobile demo page:

> - Maximum file size of installed, ready-to-run demo executable + datafiles or ROM file is 1536kB.

I think it's kind of funny that mobile demos would have to be that big... especially considering how much folks can do in the 4kB PC demos.

64k demo's (and smaller) on PC work well because of excessive CPU power. Generally speaking, the smaller the program is, the less room there is to optimize code, and the more CPU power it'll eat up.

Since the handhelds lack CPU power, they would probably have to depend more on a larger file size to look good. Of course, its always a challenge to look good AND be a small file size :)

Well, just got back from the Hammer presentation. Few comments regarding the party:

The atmosphere is KICK-ASS! I wish I had free time, I would have bought a machine-spot and brought my computer there! Oh well.

The Bitboys presentation was really interesting. The sad news is that they are moving away from PC-markets for now. They did show working samples of their Axe 3D-accelerator (along with prototype vid-card). And they showed a hardware-accelerated demo that used their 3D-accelerator for handheld-devices. It was cool! I thought at first that "Who needs 3D on cell-phones and PDA's?", but after seeing that demo, I'm convinced that it will be a must-have feature in the future. It had FSAA and the works. All in all, they seemed to be really smart and nice bunch of people.

The Hammer-presentation was kinda of let-down. There were no running machines being shown, and the presentation didn't give any additional information rregarding the chip.

Didn't see any demos yet. I were there just for the presentations. But I will propably go back there once my workday is over :)

According to them, they will work on their PC video-card as well (they will receive new revision of the chip shortly), but their focus is in the mobile-market right now. But for now, they aren't focusing on the PC-market. I would guess that the reasons are that in mobile-market, the business is just opening up, whereas in the PC-business, Ati, NVIDIA and others controll the business, so it would be really difficult to enter those markets. But, they said that "we might look in to the PC-business in the future, but for now, we are focused on the mobile business".

It's not really PocketPC. Well, PDA's are one part of their market, but so is mobile-phones. And mobile phones is where the real money is (Nokia alone sold alot more phones last year that all PDA-manufacturers combined sold PDA's!)

dont see why there is need for a 3d accelerator in mobile phones

My new Nokia 6510 is more than enough for my needs.. though the games suck, liked the old versions of them better :) so yeah, would be nice to have quake or something on it

That's exactly what I thought before their demonstration ;). The screen they used was cell-phone sized, but the graphics were ALOT better than it is today. It had FSAA and the entire things was hardware-accelerated. It got about 40-50FPS and it looked good. after I saw that, the screen in my 6310i seemed rather crappy.

Exactly. I was sceptical, but their demonstration changed my mind ;)

Yep, those pics are pretty huge :p. If you are wondering what's the blue ambient ligh is about, it's because there was a video-projector showing a bluescreen right towards the guys who were taking pictures.

is it held in helsinki's hockey arena?
remember while back when they first held it there, what an improvement it seemd

Yep, that's the hockey-arena. That pic was taken before they turned off the lights. When the party begins, they shut the lights, and just about the only light from then on will be from the monitors and the various gizmos people brought there :).
