Vatican archaeologists uncovered the tomb in 2006 in a crypt under the basilica and said the fact that it was positioned exactly underneath the epigraph 'Paulo Apostolo Mart' (Paul the Apostle and Martyr) at the base of the cathedral's main altar was conclusive proof that it was the apostle's sarcophagus.

The tomb also has a hole in the top through which which pieces of cloth could be pushed, touching the relic and becoming holy in their turn.

However, nobody actually knows what is inside the tomb, which may even be a cenotaph (empty tomb) erected in the name of the saint.

I'm pretty sure that 'tomb' is empty don't they have other popes that they can dig up like a time capsule to see what's inside?

update: Pope: Basilica bones belong to apostle St. Paul

creepy... but I guess it's difficult to do DNA testing with no one else to compare it to.

Compared to the things so many Vatican residents like to get their hands on this seems positively wholesome.

From the link:

St. Paul is one of the most significant figures in Christianity. Originally a persecutor of early Christians, he became a follower of Jesus after seeing a vision on the road to Damascus, according to Christian tradition.

"Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?" the vision of Jesus asks Paul, using the apostle's birth name, in the Acts of the Apostles.

You know, if this happened today, we'd call the guy a schizo or on drugs.

ROFLMAO!! Carbon dating? Funny how the church is so confident of carbon dating to prove that their bones are somehow significant, but they try everything in their power to discredit carbon dating when it proves that a 6,000 year old earth is bullshit.

Catholic priests are allowed to molest children, too. Instead of kicking them out of the church and making sure they're prosecuted to the fullest extend of the law, the Vatican pays off the families, settling out of court, and moves the priest to a new church. Yay Pope!

I believe their arguments are
1. Carbon dating can't accurately date objects older than a few thousand years
2. Prior to the Genesis flood the earth's climate was significantly different and yadda yadda yadda blah blah blah

Separately, archaeologists have uncovered an image of St. Paul which could be "could be considered the oldest icon of the apostle known to date," the Vatican's official newspaper reported Sunday.

This is more interesting. Bones will always be bones, but it would be cool to know what the historical person of Paul looked like.

The climate being different affects the decay rate of radionuclide how...?

Catholics don't doubt the earth is more than 6,000 years old.
