I just picked up an E3000, and was wondering if there was a good guide out there for installing Tomato and some basic config settings. Not doing anything fancy, but I am having some range issues to my PC in the basement.

Don't have a lot of time to research it at the moment, so just wanted to get it up and running as quickly as possible.

got it running - any transmit power recs?

Be sure to do 30 30 30 reset before and after flashing.

http://linksysinfo.org./index.php?threads/e3000-versus-whr-hp-g54.36724/

Looks like you are going to have to do a little reading about which version is best:

http://tomatousb.org/doc:build-types

http://www.4shared.com/office/UNXfem0W/READ_THIS_CHANGELOG_FIRST.html

Search for e3000 in that file and there are some notes

http://www.4shared.com/dir/v1BuINP3/Toastman_Builds.html#dir=118755049

http://www.4shared.com/dir/v1BuINP3/Toastman_Builds.html#dir=146625583

That last link has the most recent builds.

Caveat: I do not have an e3000, and have never flashed Tomato on one; I am sure there is someone here who has. The e3000 is also supported in DD WRT, but: I personally think Tomato is better.

I recently installed toastman tomatousb mod on an e2000, and on an e3000 I purchased yesterday for somebody. Flash went fine, everything working as expected.

To install you simply go to the firmware upgrade section in the e3000 and load the tomato firmware (.bin file).

If you want to compare features in the different mods, check this wikipedia article.

Anyone test the scheduler to see if it can reboot the router on a schedule? I wish someone would offer a feature to bounce the WAN port on a schedule.

I had that running on the router that's being replaced with the E3000. It was running stock tomato, and it worked, and I see it's still there in the latest mods.

Great - which firmware version did you go with on the E3000? Do you recommend doing the 30/30/30 reset as well?

I got it up and running, but my 5ghz range is very poor - basically within the room only. Anyone have any recommendations on power settings?. I arbitrarily set both to 300, but I read somewhere to keeping around 70.

Set them to 0 (variable) and report back. Also, go to "Advanced", "Wireless" and tinker with the "Interference Mitigation" settings (usually turning off = better IMO).

Which firmware you are using?

Be aware that with this type of Router the Wireless works better with the stock firmware.

Flashing is suggested only if you need a special feature that is only available with a 3rd party firmware, and the feature is more important to you than the Wireless performance.

In addition you need really good Wireless Client card many of them even if they suppose to work with AGN are not necessarily do it well.

I used this firmware version:
tomato-E3000USB-NVRAM60K-1.28.7495MIPSR2-Toastman-RT-VPN

I think the problem may actually be my wireless networking card settings, as my laptop is able to find and maintain a signal, but the desktops don't seem to be able to pick up the 5GHz N at all. Maybe it's some settings or technical limitation.

Did you try the settings that I mentioned above?

Yes, I did set all the power levels to 0. My laptop is OK, but not my desktops. They have some relatively old draft wireless-N cards in them, so maybe they can't handle the signal.

On that same page, do you have WMM at disable or enable? I've read that enabling it may help a few cards. Worth a shot.

For what it's worth, here are my wireless cards:

In a sandybridge machine running Vista x64:

In an old P4 running XP:

Edit: Oh, looks like these can only do 2.4GHz - no wonder I can't see the N signal.

I just picked up an E-3000 but haven't received it yet. I was just wondering if you had any luck solving your issues and how you like the unit thus far? :)

Try it first for a week as is (i.e., leave it alone donot FLASH).

This way you would have a frame of reference. In most type of use the upper tier Exxxx do better with the stock firmware.

I think that is sound advice. I have to do some reading to see exactly what benefits you get from the 3rd party firmare over stock. I see people say things like reflashing turns a $40 dollar router into a $200 dollar router or some other pretty bold claim. I always wondered if that was just over exuberance or hard fact. Then I see lots of posts by what I assume are people with limited knowledge of advanced features like myself who don't know how to set up the router once they reflash it. :)

It looks like my only outstanding issue is having my 2.4 GHz draft wireless-N desktops connect to the 2.4GHz in n mode. Right now, I can just get b/g, but I have some older b/g devices as well.

I think it may not be possible for the E3000 to run 2.4GHz in b/g/n mode - if anyone knows for sure, please let me know.

Otherwise, router is great, speeds, especially on the 5GHz are very fast. I did just go straight to Tomato even though I'm a newbie at this network stuff, since I thought if I didn't go for it, I'd never learn it. Probably a lot of cool stuff that I'm not even aware of.

Thanks donfm for bringing this up.

"The Myth of the Flat Earth".[6].
In 1945, it was listed by the Historical Association (of Britain) as the second of 20 in a pamphlet on common errors in history.

Now we have the DD-WRT/Tomato myth.

Years ago, Linksys came out with the very popular WRT-54g.

In reality, as is, the device was much bellow the average of its time.

However, flashed with DD-WRT (or Tomato) it really shined. Hence "Flashing turns a $40 dollar router into a $200 dollar router".

However time past, today when the Wireless per-se is concerned on the new AGN simultaneous Wireless, Flashing is actually Flushing the Wireless part of the Router.

On the other hand many conservative still think that Earth is "Cool" and "Flat". :colbert: - :hmm:

You make an excellent point sir.

I think you have to take into consideration that fact the people who buy routers and frequent this website are electronics "tweakers" for the most part. They are addicted to playing with settings and the more settings the merrier to them. Some play when they have no idea what they are even doing. Then they come to Anandtech to find out how to unbrick their router....:)

I on the other hand just want a working router and have no need for after market firmware. My E-3000 works great as it is right out of the box no tweaking necessary.

I was originally considering Tomato for my e3000 because I heard it might run better than DD-WRT. After not finding the level of documentation I wanted, I decided to go with DD-WRT since I was more familiar with it. I currently have a WRT54G-TM that has been rock solid for almost 3 years now. Despite following the directions exactly, I got a failed upgrade message when sending the "trailed -e3000.bin". It was downhill from there. My original justification was to remove my WRT54G-TM from the loop so I am not running two routers. What I did not see until now was that wireless performance is better in the stock firmware. Can the stock firmware be set to be just a switch/wireless AP? If that is the case, I might leave it stock and just daisy chain it with my existing router. My main goal is to get faster and better signal in my house. 54Mbps just is not cutting it anymore. Aside from that, my old router works great. I currently use just a few features like Dynamic DNS and Wake On Lan support.
