mmmm, he has to be careful, but I think it's okay. He's a good looking enough guy that he can at least be used for an "any" role, like Freddie Prinze or something :D

Well he wasn't in anything until Smallville. And a lot of TV actors never make it to the big screen anyways. I REALLY REALLY wished they would have cast him in the Superman movie, although Brandon Routh isn't a bad choice... but still, too bad WB is too anxious to cash in on Superman while Smallville and superhero movies are still hot.

He did well enough in Cheaper by the Dozen. That's not to say that the movie wasn't horrible because it was, but Tom could probably be more than superman once smallville is over.

I don't think that Smallville has the same kind of cultural penetration that Star Trek and Shatner have had. So, Welling probably has a better chance of breaking out of the typecast mold.

Shatner was typecast because his role had quirks. It's hard to be typecast as a small-town boy because it's such a generic character. Clark/Superman don't have quirks that would prevent people seeing Tom in other roles. Meanwhile, I believe pop culture has done enough to explain Shatner's quirks that I don't have to.
