Long after Tom Delay was forced to resign from the house, and after long long long delays,
The political corruption trial of Tom Delay finally will start at least 6 or eight years after the facts.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101025/ap_on_go_co/us_delay_trial

And not in the Texas venue of Delay's choice, but as the link predicts, its going to be a slug fest. Hopefully decided on the facts of Texas State laws, but there is no sense in denying its going to be politically charged from beginning to end.

As OP on this thread, I will deny my bias as I hope Delay will end up serving richly deserved jail time, but I have to recognize some may not agree with me.

So to some extent, we may all have to get out our lawn chairs, our popcorn, and barf bags, and watch the long delayed Delay trial progress. Maybe a little come down for Tom Delay, who spent some time recently dancing with the stars and now risks dancing with prison inmates.

I'm strongly against prison rape (donate to www.justdetention.org), but there could be a whole new meaning to 'Tom De Lay'. Hopefully, his corruption is punished.

Blagojovich was not convicted. Can't really get excited about DeLay.

I predict this will turn into just a partisan hissy-fit.

The trial will end without anything really changing in our political world, except we just transferred another shitload of taxpayer monies to lawyers.

Delay wasn't 'forced' to resign.

He resigned on his own after giving up his leadership position. He decided that he did not want to be a rank and file member so he left on his own.

BTW I wish a few of the crooked Democrats would follow his lead and resign rather than fight it to the end.

Heh. He allegedly used the auspices of the RNC to launder corporate funds for Texas repub candidates, something illegal at the time under Texas law.

So, uhh, what about the other alleged perps? I mean, if true, somebody in the RNC was obviously complicit... maybe a lot of somebody's...

There's little doubt that Perry would pardon him if convicted- he knows too much to be left in a position where rolling over would be his best option, kinda like Ol' Scooter....

Why don't they bring back the Nixon approach, pardon him for whatever he possibly did, before a trial.

Craig, thank you for the link. The thought of prison rape as a socially acceptable part of criminal punishment absolutely sickens me, especially when I hear people joking about it. It's good to know there are people doing something about it, and how people can help.

The mention of his name brings back memories of the long list of repubs that made it into the Hall of Shame along with him during the Bush years.

When Bush Corp. gave a nod and wink to Big Business that the regulatory agencies had all been neutered and the doors to the Treasury was swung wide open to be blatantly plundered by all of his ultra-rich friends, and when he whipped out his no-limit deficit exploding credit card on the taxpayer's dime, the feeding frenzy started and the orgy of wanton greed and corruption created a fine crop of criminal repub politicians.

So much so that even some Dems got caught up in the greed-induced corruption that was going on then. How mezmerizing it was to have that flood of tax dollars pouring out of the treasury with hardly any controls or accountability attached.

Iraq was the enormously profitable cash cow that Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld et al dreamed of and ecstatically exceeded all of their expectations. They certainly milked that one dry compliments of the taxpayer.

What a dream come true for them all. No small wonder that they would do anything to have that back again. They are still chronically addicted to the sheer gluttony they created for themselves during those wonder years of 2000-2008 and are drooling and chomping at the bit to get it all going once again.

Thanks, I appreciate your repulsion by it. I'm generally against any jokes with any serious intent apparent or making light of the subject; Tom 'De Lay' was too much to pass up, but without any seriousness, despite the man supporting the virtual enslavement of thousands of young women calling their abusers 'models for the world' and *blocking reform passed nearly unanimously by others in Congress* because they gave him donation. Just Detention is a great group who has had impressive wins at reducing the risk of rape.

Delay is a complete and utter slimeball. I would love nothing more than to see him hauled off to prison, although if I remember correctly the case against him was not that convincing (legally that is, morally he's still an awful human being.)

I didn't mean that I minded your joke about DeLay. Yes, I'm inconsistent on that one, but it was truly funny - and politicians are special because they spend a career raping everybody else, so a little joke at their expense is fine by me even if it is in otherwise bad taste. ;)

Thanks, I didn't think you were, just that I needed to explain my making it.:) If the joke seems to implicitly endorse the rape, I'm not in favor of it.

I'm careful about that because the usual 'prison rape' joke sounds like it really does endorse it, and the 'joke' is just a sly reference to the risk. 'Say hello to Bubba' type stuff.

Too many people when asked say they really don't care too much - 'teach him a lesson.'
