Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six

T

Tim

Does anyone on these forums still play this game? (multiplayer)
If you did, what name did you use?

There was a long history with this game and an active community playing since 98 on the MSN gaming zone, gamespy arcade, and IGZones* (*Since the MSN Gaming zone quit hosting servers)

The game has just recently started to trickle down to almost nobody playing anymore.

I would say for the last 3 years or so, the community got small enough for everyone to somewhat know each other pretty well.

That being said, are there games that any of you other people have had a hard time letting go of?

I played it for a year or two - I loved it... can't remember my name, but I much preferred the R6 type of game to CS.

The Zone? is it like Game Spy?

anyway, I remember playing R6 in a LAN/pub and ppl just sat there and camp, since one shot from any gun would kill. Also, the constant yelling "wtf" is simply a result of failed Heartbeat Sensor. Flashbangs are fun too :)

MSN gaming zone. Died some time ago, I remember playing lots of games on it, including MechCommander.

As for the OP, I had Ghost Recon (fun) and Raven Shield (FUN MP!) as well as Splinter Cell (completely different...) but never Rainbow Six.

I LOVED that game. In fact, if they made an updated version of it I would be overjoyed. Nothing as ever compared in terms of pre-planning your mission, go codes, etc.

lol i'm not from that clan man.

R6 was my first online fps game. back then, i played with AOL dial-up with the average ping around 300-400. i founded a clan of dial-up users and called it "SCUD" (Slow Connections Unite to Destroy) and we would take on guys with broadband and often get our asses kicked. we eventually went on to master the art of "pre-shooting" which is when you know you're going to run into an enemy (using the heart-beat sensor), you start shooting in advance because of your lag. most times you were dead before your bullets even left your gun due to the lag. but it was still fun as hell. i remember later on, i eventually got broadband and it was like night and day difference. i was so easy to pwn then, dial-up trained me to be a quick and precise killer. hehe.

then got rogue spear and played that a lot too. a lot of co-op sessions for both games, fun, fun times.

oh and like manimal, this was on my G4 powermac (sawtooth), playing through gameranger. i wonder if gameranger is still around.

I have every copy through R6 Vegas 2, except for the one version that had the jail map. (Heard it was crap, so I passed.)

My favorite maps, I think they were a few versions in, were the tanker ship and the airplane on the tarmac. (I think they were on Rogue Spear.)

I miss being able to plan their routes like the original games, made it easier to organize them. Now they just follow you around...

I still play FarCry online from time to time. The 1.4 patch (that the community didn't want at all) is really what killed this game for everyone. It never had a huge following, but there were more than enough people playing to keep it entertaining on any given night. Now there's mostly European servers that are full and US ones with a few stragglers in them.

I was sad when the zone went away... Good bye playing Age of Empires II or Jedi Knights Dark Forces II... Both still great games in my opinion. I never got tired of playing them, ever. I did play MechCommander but it sucked because nothing worked for me... But I was a noob :p

I also liked playing Star wars battlefields or whatever. God damn, pisses me off that you can't play those games online anymore.

Rogue Spear was the first online game I played, A few months back I decided to revisit it and was able to find a digital download copy for about $10. It's still a cool game just nowhere to play online, maybe we should get an Anandtech game going ... ;).

I use to play AoE 1, R6 I & II, Jedi Knight, Quake 2 and Outlaws on there with a 14.4kbps modem. Then, 300ms was lpb and 400 was standard...*shudders*. Pretty unreliable service, lots of games never started.

R6 I was the shit then. First "wait half an hour once dead" game I played, and it was fun being able to kill people with one shot. Stopped playing ages ago.

Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight and Rainbow Six occupied many hours of my time back in the 90s. Those were the days. Games today might have shiny graphics but they can't compare to those classics.
