Tom Clancy

I'm pretty sure it just means he's in charge. Like Rainbow Six, he's always called Rainbow Six, meaning he's in charge of the Rainbow unit. I can't remember the second-in-command's name but he was called Rainbow Five.

I watched Black Hawk Down this weekend and they use the same Six designation to denote the person in charge of a unit. The Captain was "Something" Six. I heard it several times.

Edit: Beyond Rainbow Six, if he's called a "six man," I assume it has something to do with the command of another unit somehow but I've not read any other Clancy books except The Hunt for Red Ocbober..

That's partly where my online alias comes from, I use it everywhere. Interestingly enough, John Clark is my real name. I never read any of Tom Clancy's books so I didn't know there was a John Clark in there.

poor bastards

To say that he is a 'six man' would imply, as BiggerHammer pointed out, that he was a member of MI-6, which is British Intelligence. However, in the reference to the book Rainbow Six, he is the six, or commander, or the unit known as Rainbow which is a NATO Counter-Terrorist Strike Force.

Saying that he is a six man would be the same as saying that he is a Company Man, in reference to the CIA.
