I hate them. Most in Oklahoma are worse than our free public highways

In Orange County, CA, toll roads are an alternative. You don't have to take them. But you can if you want to.
And yes, they offer transponders (FastTrak).
I take it from time to time. A very relaxing and scenic drive.

I take the 241 toll road when coming home from work. It makes my commute 10 minutes faster. That translates into spending 50 minutes less on the road per week or over 43 hours less per year.

The only time I use one is when I go to head office. On the way home, I take the 407 north of Toronto. It gets me the hell out of there a lot quicker.

edit: oh yeah and the company foots the bill

the 407 is a love-hate relationship with everyone

edit: since you're in that area i'll offer some background... the QEW/403 multiplex that goes from burlington to oakville was a result of the PC government's selloff of (what was to be) hwy 403 between burlington and oakville to the 407 consortium; in other words, the 407 between burlington and mississauga was supposed to be the 403. now that the intended 403 alignment is tolled (which went against all proper logic), the QEW has gone over-capacity in that region and it's a POS through burl-oak. the construction you see on the bronte creek bridge gives you a hint of how far they're going to widen the QEW/403; now the only option left to get traffic moving in halton.
Hmm. All I know is that I have to drive from Pickering back across the TO area and the 401 is jammed. The one time, there was an accident on the 407 so I stuck with the 401 which there was also an accident on. Talk about a parking lot! Took me 2 hours to get moving again.
there's no real way out of that.
