Ok, so I was driving home from Illinois yesterday, and hopped on the tollway that goes back to Wisconsin. Threw it my 50 cents at the entrance ramp.. and NOTHING.. damn thing wouldn't change.. This is the like 4th or 5th time his has happened.. usually I just throw in more change and it will finally register that you paid.. but I didn't have any more change, just bills, and this was an unstaffed ramp. Plus, I am sick of having to pay extra because their stupid counters don't work.. so I just gave it a couple seconds and went, since there were people behind me waiting..

Anyone else have this type of problem? They don't staff the onramps, and then if the machines don't work you go through it anyway, but they take a picture of your license plate supposidly. How can they possibly enforce that? I paid, I _know_ I paid correct (5 dimes = 50 cents last time I checked), and yet it didn't change.. I had no other choice but to go through or pay more (Which I didn't have)..

Other thing that irritates me is offramps often don't have staffed booth's either.. if you don't have change you have no choice but to go through or drive an extra 20-30 minutes down the road to find a booth. Insane.

They inform you that there won't be an attendant on staff. I understand your frustrated, but it is clearly posted ahead of time.
 
I just had my first experience with unstaffed tollbooths last week in Denver on E-470. I knew it was a toll road, but I didn't think I'd have to worry about exact change.

On those booth's it a common occurance. I've never seen it posted that there won't be an attendant. I usually extra change, because the IL booths typically suck.

j/k... but I'm always conscious of missing and get nervous when I'm about to throw.
 
manned booths = government sponsored begging. I hate toll roads in general but I hate toll booths that are manned and people are sitting there getting a pay check to do nothing more than collect money for their paychecks. 🙁
 
I use EZ-Pass. But I have never heard that if there is no attendant and you don't have exact change you can't exit. They can shove that $0.50 you know where, I'm not going an extra exit out of my way! Tolls should be removed anyway. And don't try to tell me that the road will deteriorate either I know better.

Living in CA, there's only two tollways that I've passed through -- one south of Irvine and one up past Santa Clara (680 or something?)

Every bridge and road that used to have a toll is now free. Yay.
 
ez-pass, never had to worry about change or waiting.

and no, they do not keep track of where you are going you paranoid loons 😉
 
In NY/NJ.. I heard tolls were only being collected "initially" to pay for certain things... but they conveniently never stopped collecting... how long has it been now ? How f*^@!$*( sh!tty are the roads ?!

Fvcktards... I hate NY roads with a passion. Can I move out west now ?

It started in the 70's...
 
I've never had a problem with those baskets.
Here's how to operate them:
Come to a complete stop.
Roll your window all the way down.
Put the change in your fist.
Hold your fist directly over the middle of the hopper.
Drop the coins into the hole.

I've never had a problem doing this, and I live in NJ where we have LOTS of these type of toll booths.
It's my friends who roll the window halfway down and lob the coins from inside the car while still rolling at 5MPH that seem to have issues with their money not registering.
 
I had the same thing happen on the dallas tollway two weeks ago, i tossed in a dollar worth of change trying to get it to accept it then i just drove thru. I'm wondering if they are going to send me a ticket for not paying.
 
Money should still register. As long as it goes in the basket and falls, there shouldn't be a problem. It's not like the machine purposely screws you over cause you were trying to do it quick. think think

I really hate this whole EZ-Pass / I-Pass / whatever-pass thing. I was all for it before, I thought -- "Hey, this thing will save me like 15 minutes on my morning commute... rock on!".

Then I realized that this is the state's way of permenantly screwing you over. Now it's just that much easier for them to take your money. You think that they are going to take the toll booths down now that they can take your money with zero staffing or overhead? In Illinois, the transponder is relatively cheap as long as you have them charge your credit card *automatically* every time your balance goes under $10. Otherwise, the transponder costs twice as much. Screw them. The toll booths should have been gone years ago when the interstate system was finished.

The states that still have tolls are greedy, and in my experiences end up having roads that are in worse condition compared to states with no tolls. I was about to fax in my order for my I-pass, but I'll keep throwin' the change, thank you very much.
