Toledo vs Manchester

I pre-orderer a 4800+ a few weeks ago, but I still havent gotten it. Today the expected delivery date was pushed back another week, so I am considering getting a 4600+ instead, since they are available here in Norway.. (None of the Toledo cpus are atm.)

I've been reading various messageboards the last couple of days, and everyone seems to be recommending the Toledo because of the bigger cache. While I agree this does sound sensible, does anyone actually have any experience with the Manchester cores? I read the test of the 4200+ here at Anandtech, it seemed to do pretty well. But I havent found a single test of the 4600+ anywhere..

Can anyone give me some input on this issue? Is the Toledo in any way superior to the Manchester because of the bigger cache? Or does everyone just recommend it because "bigger cache seems sweet".. ;D

Thanks for your time in advance.

hehe.. The delivery date is still unconfirmed though, and I'm kinda impatient as its the last piece of hardware needed to complete my new system. 😀 I dont wanna risk having to wait another 4 weeks, and right now that doesnt seem entirely unlikely if I decide to wait for the Toledos.. So I might opt not to wait, atleast if someone with technical insight explains to me that the extra cache is just for show. 😀

It's not for show. THe 4800+ has multiple advantages over the 4600+. The cache helps in games, and other applications, and it's more future proof 🙂.

I'm not sure how much the extra cache would help in most real-world situations. However, I do know that I went through a similar thought process (do I buy the 4200+ which is shipping now, or wait an unconfirmed amount of time for a 4400+?), and I am glad that I did wait for the 4400+, because otherwise I'd always have this nagging question in my mind about what could have been. Besides, the wait didn't turn out to be very much longer for the 4400+ vs. the 4200+. 🙂

Not really that into overclocking.. Havent been since back in the day when it was actually necessary. 😀 That said, I assume you can overclock both the 4600+ and the 4800+ as well. Most likely to speeds higher then what you could do with a 4200+ and a 4400+ no? And seeing as money really isnt a big concern for me (in this humble context anyway) I just dont see any reason to get the lower end ones.

The extra cache doesn't make a big difference now 3-5%, more in some games, but it will likely make more of a difference in the near future as 64bit apps become mainstream.

Ok thanks, that was the kind of input I was looking for. Guess I'll wait another couple of weeks for the Toledo then.
