Negative.

You should have recommended an Opteron 146 ;)

Nah, the 3200+ Venice is good.

Well id say buying an OEM 3200 on these forums, which sell for like $100-$115 shipped now would be the best buy.

However N7 is right, opterons are better with extra cache and the fact that they OC to like 3ghz fairly easy. However, they also go for around $150 and are going to be a bit hard to find right now.

I would say if your friend is going to be buying one in store new, go for the opteron. They cost almost the same new now... so its almost a moot point. Opteron has more cache and OCs easier and higher.

well, he bought it off newegg and it was on sale for like $140

does the opteron require a different motherboard?

Yeah well thats newegg. Newegg isnt always the cheapest. Theres many online stores that have the opteron 146 for $150 total. However, like I said, they are in high demand now, and they sell almost instantly when stock comes in. Most places are out of stock.

His friend doesn't need an Opteron, guys. I think those should stay largely within the enthusiast camp ;)

There's certainly nothing wrong with a 3200+ Venice. They can overclock quite well, and are fine chips at stock speeds.

You did just fine.
