holy cow, you and i joined on the same day back in '99

how weird is that...

Osaka is louder and can be more intimidating than Tokyo, some people say it's a little more friendlier too. I like it, I grew up in Osaka😉 Tokyo to me is more like any other major city in the world, big and bland.

People tend to talk louder, faster, and with more slang. Osaka was a merchant's city so some of that tradition is still left. Tokyo people tend to look down on Osaka accents as being "unrefined".

Subway is fairly convinient, the Midousuji line runs from Kita area (Osaka station, all the downtown big department stores, etc) to Minami area (Shinsabashi which is a popular street for hanging out and shopping, America mura, Nipponbashi). The JR lines are not as convinient as in Tokyo though.

Things to see in Osaka:

Universal Studios Japan - self explanatory (I haven't been there yet, I had dates to go there on two different occaisions but it rained both times🙁 )
Nipponbashi - a lot like Akihabara, lots of electronics, anime, adult goods, and other stuff you don't find anywhere else
Osaka Castle - it was rebuilt with concrete so it's a lot more accesible than other castles like Himeji, has some nice exhibits about the history of Osaka and Toyotomi Hideyoshi inside
Umeda/Kita district - near Osaka station, basically downtown Osaka, with all the major department stores and one of the world's largest underground shopping malls
America Mura - also known as Amemura, has lots of clothing stores that teenagers frequent, also a bunch of clubs and music stores. More centered toward hiphop and rap
Dotonbori - located in near Namba area, lots of good restraunts and nightlife (similar to Kabuki chou in Tokyo), also walk towards Nambe for shopping and things
Osaka Aquarium - has a whale shark and a huge tank in the middle

I don't know when you are going but there are a lot of good festivals in July and Aug. Plus Kobe, Kyoto, and Nara are each only about an hour away by train.

You forgot getting a picture in front of the restaurant with the crab waving his claws. And tako-yaki.

That's Dotonbori. And Kuidaore statue, the clown with the drum on it's back. I ate at that restraunt but it's only average.

Yes, definately takoyaki. There's a store in Dotonbori, a shack really, that supposedly uses the biggest pieces of octopus in Japan. Osaka people are said to have at least one takoyaki maker in each house. Also check out Kinryu ramen, pretty good taste and good prices. And okonomiyaki is another Osaka food too.

but it is better

Next thing I know, you'll be telling me that the Tokyo Tower is taller than the Tsuutenkaku (Osaka Tower)😉

Not far from the crab restaurant, there was a line of people (at least 50) in the middle of the street for this outside takoyaki stand. Waited in line to get some undercooked, over priced octopus. Last time I had takoyaki.
Like the Okonomiyaki chain in Tokyo. Cook it right there at your table, kinda like yakiniku.

Shaved fish flakes=yummy.
