Toilet problems?

Weird things are happening with one of my toilets. I live in a house with two roommates and three toilets. One of my roommates lives downstairs and has been having weird things happen with his toilet. Whenever someone upstairs flushes a toilet, the one downstairs stairs "bubbling." The water in the one downstairs starts frothing and bubbling up, kinda like a water fountain. No actual bubbles, the water just starts to "act up." Anyone know whats going on?

Thanks

Uh oh is right if you have a septic system instead of being on city water.

Also really old pipes can cause a backflow to lower level systems.

So - old house? Septic system?

More info please

Not an old house and no septic tank. There's no actual bubbles, but it kinda looks like what happens when you put a hose underwater and let the water bubble up. there's no actual "froth" or foam. The water just gets very excited.

Your main septic line is starting to plug up. When the upstairs toilets are flushed the pressure builds up downstream and you see bubbles and the water moving in the downstairs toilet.

Call the landlord and describe the problem. The landlord should at least get the lines rootered out. If the problem gets much worse your friend downstairs will get a very nasty surprise when your crap ends up all over his bathroom floor.

plugged vent or main spetic line - which is it? Or are they the same thing? Unfortuantely I "own" the house. How much does it cost to get lines rootered?

See if you have a clean out just outside of the house. If you do, take the cap off and have someone inside flush a toilet. If the water comes out of the cleanout then the problem is downstream of the clean out. If it flows normally there then it is upstream.

A 'rooter' job will depend on your area and how far they have to go. An approximate price is $60 to $70. At least that's what it cost me the last time before I completely replaced the entire drain line out to the city pipe.
