Toilet paper substitute

I read The Beach while in Amsterdam, a couple weeks before heading to Vietnam. The narrator told about Southeast Asian bathrooms not having any toilet paper, but just a pitcher of water, and he was very confused as to what the hell to do with that.

Well fast forward a few weeks and I find myself in a bathroom in Hoi An. There is a hole in the ground and a bucket of water with a little cup in it. Now if this is used for what I think it is, i dont think I'd want to touch that water.

Why do they not use toilet paper? What is with the bucket? Any asians help me out here.
 
They use their hands to clean the crap off their asses with the water.
They usually get their butts more clean this way. The downside is that their hands are full of crapola.
With toilet paper, you merely smear the crap onto your butt though you do take the excess off.
 
Its cause some asian countries have antiquated plumbing, toilet paper would screw it up.
water gets you cleaner anyways

You dont have to use your hand just splash water in your butthole.
 
Very common practice in Asia (maybe even Europe) to clean your butt with water after pooping, of course you are supposed to wash your hands after.
Cleaning your butt with TP only will leave some crap on your butt and is not very sanitary.

If you are poor all you have in your toilet is a bucket with a cup,

If you are middle class or rich, bathrooms have bidet's (handheld, or incorporated to the seat)

The usual way I clean up bidet spray water---> dry up with TP, uses less TP and more sanitary.

Bidets are are big thing in Japan they have heated bidets with adjustable pulsating jets that cost $5000.


OF course in America people would stare at a bidet and say WTF????

I've heard of that, but I don't think I can imagine the concept. Weirdos.
 
Man I can't stand toilet paper. I have to use soo many tissues to get it clean, even then you cant get it as clean as we Asians do. Serious - Thats why I don't like travelling in planes.

We dont have a bucket of water, just a pipe with flowing water so you don't run out 🙂
What you do is first wash the ****** off and then use your hands to clean it..Not really disgusting since you have soap in the bathroom.. a bit of poo wont kill you 😛
I am just used to this - but are there any other special tricks that I don't know about in your toilet? 😛
