Toggle Switch for 'Nado

Title explains where I'm at. That fan is so loud even @ 5v on my Nexus that I want to have the option of turning it off all together. Can I simply buy a $2.99 toggle switch and connect it to the red and black wires of the Tornado to have the option of switching it on and off? Sorry if this is a ridiculous question, electrical stuff scares me a little-I'd really rather not blow up my rig over something this stupid :p.

It is that simple but you only need the switch on one lead, usually the positive.

All the switch does is open or close the circuit. Closed loop is on and the electrons are flowing. Open is off and the electron are just hanging out.

You are looking for a SPST switch. (Single pole, Single Throw) You can find one at any hardware store.

That's pretty cool. I get what you're saying about using the positive lead. That makes total sense. Next question is, if I hook up an SPDT(?) (two output voltages, depending on which way you toggle) switch after the Nexus has already adjusted the voltage, would that still work? Seems like then I could reduce the voltage lower (sending out 5v from the Nexus and then reduce it by 7/12 @ the switch=2.58) I'm guessing by the previous response that it will work, but just want to make sure. I guess from reading more information about this that the fan may not spin well or at all at such low voltages (2.6), but so long as I'm carefull, this setup would allow me to adjust with infinite variability from 2.58v all the way to 12v. Is this assumption right, or am I missing something?

Sorry I don't know what the 'Nexus" is. Is it a fan bus?

If yes, you just put a SPST switch on the positive lead from the bus. That gives you variability on the fan plus on/off at the switch.

Yep, you were right. The Nexus is a fan bus. And I can easily follow your instruction. I realized that my math was wishful thinking. Thanks again.

Something like this will work great. Or if you want to have a little fun go for one of these. Also availible in red or green! Have fun with it!

PM me if you have any questions while you're working. I try log on once a day.

Thanks for the guidance and the links. I will be returning the $8 industrial strength DPDT that was the only thing available at my local HW store (I live directly in the middle of nowhere). I'll grab me a couple of those cooler-looking, easier to hook-up toggles. Muchas Gracias y Feliz Navidad, mi amigo.
