Ok, so we have fingernails presumably to aid in dexterity, fine motor skills, picking things up, etc. Why on earth do we have toenails?

They protect the ends of the toes from extreme damage. You ever looked at the toes of people who are poor and rarely wear shoes or wear home made sandals all day? Their toes look terrible from all the injuries, including the toenails. I was noticing this in a National Geographic just a while ago, in a close up of some home made sandals constructed from old tires. My feet hurt just from looking at their poor battered feet with toenails hanging part ways off, and missing.

To give you something to cut off your toes and then bend a few times. Until they dry out and then are no longer bendable. And who wants unbendable toenails? Not me, no sir.

There used to be a bum on the light rail who would take two pairs of socks and wrap 'em up with packing tape. I always thought that was some damn good bum ingenuity. Bet his feet fuckin reeked tho.
