I think the stick figure's hand was on her shoulder, not her neck

Possible but I interpreted it as taking her to the looney bin. Could go either way.

if you look closely, she has an oxygen mask on in the last frame. I don't think she killed herself. I think she was distraught, he tried to help her, realized he couldn't and then they took her away.

Either way, its not a happy comic.

Wow. That was quite a comic.

Maybe the guy was telling himself not to feel responsible for not doing enough to save the friend. And the alt text was a sarcastic way of saying that there's no "everything will get better for you" button.

On a lighter note, one relative once asked me about programmers and caffeine. I told them it varied by coder, but then tried to explain this xkcd comic to them. There were a couple of assignments in college in which the Ballmer Peak held true.

I am thinking he was trying to take advantage of her being at waist level.

Things didn't work out so well for her.

It seems pretty straightforward for me, girls is depressed, guy tries to help but it turns out you can't just magically make someone happier no matter how hard you try. So they are taking her away to the mental hospital now.

EDIT: you can see it like the small panels are flashbacks and the main panel is the present where the girl is now in the standard "padded white room" for suicidal people at a mental hospital and in the background it shows how she got there. Kind of a depressing interpretation, but I don't really see any non-depressing way to interpret it.

It really does look like he choked her.

Man you gotta be pretty messed up in the head to interpret that as him chocking her, he clearly is putting his hand on her shoulder to comfort her. I mean for one thing who the heck chokes someone with one hand? That isn't even possible unless you have gigantic hands, second it doesn't fit at all with the text.
