You still have the same sorts of thing, though to a far lesser extent. Like banking, it seems radio stations are produced for mass consumption. I hardly ever listen to the radio, so I'm not so negatively influenced. Perhaps I'm missing something. I do agree, and to a large extent I do blame file sharing, music has become like movies in their lack of imagination. It doesn't mean that groups aren't trying to produce good quality music, just that the record companies don't produce it. They're afraid to take losses on new concepts and I'm thinking profitability is significantly lower.
I remember the transition in the early 90s to all digital, a lot of musicians fought against it (Neil Young was particularly outspoken on the matter). I mean, think about the principle of filtering in a receiver. A purist would play the full range, even those elements above 20-kHz, with the idea that hearing will block out any imperceptable sounds. But even then you have a different interperatation of the music and how a system reproduces the sound.
EDIT: I also like 3 doors down, staind (whiney but well done), No Address, Crossfade, Hawthorne Heights, Mark Lanegan, Scott Stapp, Fivespeed, Roadrunner United, Three Days Grace, HIM, 10 Years, Avenged Sevenfold, Breaking Benjamin, Weezer, Lostprophets, White Stripes, Gorillaz, and a lot of others. Then again, I'm an admitted musical slut.
