Today's cuteness overload...what has 68 feet, 17 mouths and worth $22k?

There is something neat about a dog breed that was bred to hunt lions! I kinda want a Ridgeback, but I don't think I could keep up with one.

But I see a nice hat and boots.

kidding.

Burns: Some men hunt for sport,
Others hunt for food,
The only thing I'm hunting for,
Is an outfit that looks good...

See my vest, see my vest,
Made from real gorilla chest,
Feel this sweater, there's no better,
Than authentic Irish setter.

See this hat, 'twas my cat,
My evening wear - vampire bat,
These white slippers are albino
African endangered rhino.

Grizzly bear underwear,
Turtles' necks, I've got my share,
Beret of poodle, on my noodle
It shall rest,

Try my red robin suit,
It comes one breast or two,
See my vest, see my vest,
See my vest.

Like my loafers? Former gophers -
It was that or skin my chauffeurs,
But a greyhound fur tuxedo
Would be best,

So let's prepare these dogs,

Mrs. Potts: Kill two for matching clogs,

Burns: See my vest, see my vest,
Oh please, won't you see my vest.

One big ass litter of puppies...that's what.

And $1300 bucks a piece? Yikes!

They're not that bad. Fairly difficult puppies, as they're rambunctious and have a decent amount of energy that needs to be vented constructively, and notoriously stubborn, but overall pretty decent. They also tend to sleep a lot, which is a major plus.

Mine will be 2 in may, and he's settled down quite a bit.

What a waste of money.

For you perhaps. The value of of something is equal to your return on investment. My dog has provided much more than $1400 in companionship, fun, excitement, and motivation (he motivates me to run). To unequivocally say "what a waste of money" is a rather ignorant statement.

My aunt and uncle have had a couple of them. They were nice dogs but they had joint problems pretty early but that's pretty common for any purebred. They seemed to shed a ton even though their fur is so short. If I were going to spend $1500 on a dog, I'd get a lab or something.

The marginal value is what you should be looking at.

Do you get ten times the companionship, fun, excitement and motivation you could have gotten from a pound puppy, which would cost less than 1/10 the price?

Now, if 1000 is less than 1/52nd of your income then why not blow a few bucks on something with low marginal value, like a Mac or an expensive pup: right?

Did anyone else catch the part about her being "an independent animal psychiatrist"?

I had to stop reading after that. It's especially baffling given that she went with psychiatrist rather than psychologist or behaviorist, meaning she's chucking benzos and SSRIs at kittens and ferrets.

Why do you think she listed each puppy as having a cost basis of $1000 as her break even point? Each puppy had substantial counseling to make sure they all felt loved in such a large litter.

Well, I'm not an economist so I'm not familiar with what "marginal value" means exactly (and I'm too lazy to look it up at the moment). But the German Shepherd Dog has very specific personality traits that I was looking for. Additionally, I researched the breeder to ensure they were good (not a puppy mill) and found out about his parents. He is a combination of the German and American lines. I wanted a dog with a lot of drive and a high prey instinct, because I had wanted to do tracking and search and rescue training.

My dog has a ton of drive. The longest I clocked him playing fetch was, no joke, 5 hours and 22 minutes. Only stopped to drink water. He was going the entire time.

Unfortunately I went to a job where I don't have a lot of free time so I haven't been able to do the training I have wanted. But I still want to eventually.

Additionally, $1000 is less than 1/52 of my income (I'm guessing you mean yearly).

Wow, 5+ hours playing fetch... I would get tired at that rate!

I was thinking about the predictability of personality traits in breeds and how that may truly add a great deal of value to the choice.

The real question is "if I got a pound-puppy instead would the extra grand in video cards and hookers make me happier than if I spent the money on the specific dog bread"

My guess, given your research, is that you knew exactly what you were doing and got the best return for your money.

Many many people do drop a grand on a dog from a mill that they chose because it was 'cute'. In this case a much better product is much less expensive at your local animal shelter.

As for blow money: Even if you are being conservative/working your way out of debt, you've still got to give yourself at-least one week's worth of pay to spend on something that you don't care about.

I want a Ridgeback someday to use as a guard dog for our goats when we're back in Northern California. My husband has a friend in Texas who breeds and trains them for that purpose. Anatolian Shepherds are a more common breed for goat guarding but we'll live an area that's way too hot for them.

We'll probably pay upwards of $1000 for our dog (not counting the friend/consulting discount my husband will get for help he's given this guy) but that's a fully trained young adult dog. I would never pay that for a puppy. We could easily lose that much $ in livestock in one mountain lion attack so I consider it a fair tradeoff.

Each of the pups in my sig cost 2k 🙂 but they are pure blood show dogs.

Infact my long hair German Shepherd is pregnant. She's pureblood german, won some competitions early in her life before I got her, and I'm looking to sell the pups for 4-5k.
