Today was my first day working at Best Buy

Today was my first full eight-hour day, I was still doing training, but it gave me a good idea as to the procedure around the store and the employees around me. And despite everything everyone has said, I liked it . First off, the employees kick ass, my managers rule, and my supervisor is really laid back, but still gets the job done. He's able to switch from fun to serious modes at the right time, when appropriate.

We had a staff meeting today before the store opened with all the employees, and despite what I heard, managers weren't really that intense regarding making sales. Yes, they pushed it, but nothing I wouldn't expect. Everyone was just flat-out friendly, and everyone seemed to be having a good time. Plus, it looks like the people in my department actually know what they're talking about (Home Theatre). And since we live in a high-class area (we're #31 in the country for sales), making quotas shouldn't be too hard. We're consistently above quotas, and right now we're 9% over :).

It's only my first day, but so far, so good!

I hope that you feel the same way during Christmas selling season, when the rabid Black Friday bargain hunters and the holiday shopping morons who don't know the difference between a DVD and a DVR start showing up in droves :)

It isnt the other workers who make retail suck. It is the corprate guys, and the customers....oh...my..god the customers. You will find the depths of stupidity with them, and it will get worse as the holiday season aproaches.

That's a good location to work Home Theater then, with so many high paying customers. Otherwise you'll be cursing it after a while.

You may get lucky and have a good store. Be sure to let us know how you feel after 6 months & 12 months ;)

Yeah, that's why I'm hoping it won't be as bad as people say, considering the income of the average person here. Then again, I'm probably wrong!

I've had friends who have worked at Comp, Best Buy, CC etc... and overall they said the same thing as you. Just don't let the managers take advantage of you and don't be shy to ask for a raise if you are doing a good job. Enjoy the employee discount and please learn the products. I have been given and overheard bad info. by employees of every major electronics retailer regarding products and what they actually do/don't do or even simple things like what comes in the box.

You'll lose ambition, it's inevitable in retail. All it takes is those first few A-hole customers.

It burns on a daily basis. I give the customers alternatives though...if they still buy it through us, that is cool.

The number is exponentially higher than in most other lines of work (law enforcement a notable exception).

Ask these guys

I pretty much learned to hate people after working in retail. As a manager at Blockbuster, I had people physically threaten me, threaten to kill me, scam artists, rich elitist pricks who looked down on the "lowly retail schlub." 5 years of that will make you a little jaded ;)

You're going into it with the right attitude, I'm sure you'll do fine and make some money then move on. In the end you will probably hate it (I think everyone hates their first job) but just remember on the hard days that you're still getting paid, and you get an employees discount so take 'em to the cleaners :D

New employee syndrome is fairly common at BestBuy, I was a victim as well... Just give it a few more weeks.

I was in BB the other daying picking up a new wireless router. I'm watching as one of the sales guys is lead around by this old lady with something she printed out, as he tries to figure out whether she needs a parallel port adapter card or a NIC.

"My <internet installation guy or something> said I needed this!" *points to paper*
"Oh, so you need a network card."
"No, I need to be able to print!"

Stay strong dude.
