I remember when plextor optical drives were hot stuff.

That was in the days of the UltraPlex 40MAX SCSI drive. I still have mine AND it still works. Their IDE burners quickly became generic drives that were just overpriced. The margins were just not there to make good custom drives with custom firmware, I suppose.

Plextor 712A, 716A, 720A, 740A, and 760A...Those were the memories.
I never paid for their overpriced drives, but they did seem to be the "Apple" of the optical drive market compared to Lite-On, NEC, and the rest.
Premium performance at a premium price.

I haven't really followed the optical market lately so I have no idea what's going on now.
