The Local news played it but it was only because the mission commander Rick Husband was from Amarillo. And another crew member was born in Lubbock (2 hours south) That and there isn't much news to report here. It's a big deal locally mainly because Husband's family stood outside that morning to watch em come across. I don't need to say what happened next. But I look at it this way they died doing what they love. They knew it's damn dangerous work, and they thrived on it.

Doing some searching on Google finds a few cursory articles.

Same as with the Challenger

I was watching the Challenger climb during lift-off . . .

I'm really appalled as to how little attention this is getting.

The entire News Media should be ashamed of themselves.

I flipped through CNN, CNBC and a local news show on my lunch break and all 3 mentioned it, those three pluse these forums (if you want to consider this place a "news source") makes it 4 for 4 today.
I dont think its being ignored.

Neither the ABC's or the XYZ's can use this to further thier agenda, so its not causing a huge stir like Cheney wearing a green coat.

One of my earliest memories is watching the debris of Challenger fall. We saw the explosion on TV, then raced outside and saw the plumes of smoke and debris falling. It was a sad day.

for Columbia

for Challenger

I was in the Firehouse doing some paperwork and had the Challenger launch on.

When I first saw the plume I knew it was a major malfunction but thought that maybe the Cabin area remained intact and they are OK.

Then I realized they had no parachute like the old Apollo series and knew they were doomed even if they had survived the tank explosion.

For Columbia I was attending some Umpire Classes when someone said to me the Shuttle had crashed in Texas. I thought maybe they crashed landed, not knowing it had broken up in the atmosphere.

I had just taken some pictures of the shuttle docked to the Space station as it passed overhead when I lived in Atlanta the week before.

The loss of a shuttle flight crew is easily forgotten in today's media landscape.

But for good reason.
