Today is my Birthday!

Every year since I've been in college I've had a final on my bd. Hell I was up until 3am last night in the computer lab trying to get my d@mn vhdl code to go through the synopsys compiler (you EE out there will know what I'm talking about when I say syponsys is the PICKIEST damn compiler in the work). Anyhow, happy bd to me!

what do you study in ethics?

part 1 of the class is law (principal/agent stuff, partnerships, corporations, basically a little knowledge into the law side of the business world) and part 2 is ethics, like your responsibility to not cheat or deceive your customers or uphold integrity, yada yada yada

is this a summer class? your college's regular session is out, right?

Nope, technically our finals week starts this friday but our ethics professor wanted to give us the exam early so we'd be done with it.

I go to UC Davis (Quarter based system)

haha had to do that my senior year

had the slowest sun machines ever

to a half hour just to compile->synth and map

we had to make a clock with adjustable divider and a bit error rate tester our senior year

what do you have to with yours?

is that for your ethics class?

We have slow @ss HP-UX machines and we have to make what's called the "infinity processor", a basic processor with an ALU that add's, sub's, and's, sll, and slr, along with the typical set of jmp, jr, jal, lw, sw (interface to RAM), etc. Then to test it we have to write a program to calculate the fibanocci sequence in its machine code (that we create) and a program that will accept the input of a number and cube that number by multiplying using the ALU. Both program sets should be synthesizeable and should run on our Altera board with the FLEX10K device.

Hey you sound like me! Except I'm a CS major. I had a Computer Ethics final Monday, and I was also doing VHDL until 3am last night. What kind of VHDL were you doing? I was designing a fully-functional integer 32-bit MIPS ALU...it was fun.

ALU is pretty much combinational logic though, it's not too difficult, we have to actually make a CPU (state machine so sequential logic) with correct timings etc that incorporates a 16-bit ALU.

Yea, it wasn't exceedingly difficult. This was a small extra credit assignment. Last week we had to make a k-bit nxn floating point register tile adder....not sure if it serves a purpose in real life but it was a real asshole to write.

I'd hope you do more difficult things in vhdl than me...seeing as this is as far into CE as the CS curriculum gets. This class has reminded me why I chose CS over CE....

go to a school that finishes finals in may. there's your solution.

i never had school past may 12th or so when i was in college.

Funny....I still have another term of class.

I didn't start classes till March.

Happy Bday, and don't forget to cheat on that Ethics exam. The successful results outweigh the consequences!
