January 12, 1985 - Qubilah Shabazz, the daughter of Malcolm X, is arrested for conspiring to kill Louis Farrakhan. Shabazz believed that Farrakhan was responsible for the assassination of her father in 1964, and sought to exact revenge through a hired killer. Subsequently, Shabazz admitted her "responsibility," but not her guilt of the charges, and the government accepted a plea bargain.

Old West
January 12, 1864 - The NAVAJOs have been ordered to move to the Bosque Redondo Reservation in New Mexico. Many who decide not to go move to the Canyon de Chelly. Kit Carson has been directed to force the NAVAJOs to move or to be killed as "hostiles". Carson and Captain Pfeiffer advance to the canyon. On this date, Carson enters the west end of the canyon. They encounter a band of NAVAJOs, and kill 11 of them. While in the canyon, Carson will order the burning of the NAVAJOs' food and cherished peach trees.

January 12, 1944 - "Smoking Joe" Frazier born. Former heavyweight boxing champion Joseph "Smoking Joe" Frazier was born in Beaufort, South Carolina. Frazier was a 1964 Olympic gold medalist who won the heavyweight championship in 1968.

Equal Rights
January 12, 1948 - U.S. Supreme Court decision (Sipuel v. Oklahoma State Board of Regents) said a state must afford Blacks "an opportunity to commence the study of law at a state institution at the same time as [other] citizens."

Somehow I tend to think the world would be a better place, if only a little bit, had that particular conspiracy succeeded.
